Tough Foe
Hey guys,
I was talking with a friend recently about Antonio Margarito. My buddy had been quite impressed by him and I went in to the reasons that I felt he was not a true superstar talent. Anyway, as I finished up, I did throw in "He sure has Kermit Cintron's number though." That started me thinking. I think it would be fun if each fighter in the game had a slot where you could designate any other fighter in the game as an easy foe or a tough foe. For instance, in the case of Margarito, his tough foe might be Daniel Santos while his easy foe would be Kermit Cintron. He would subsequently, have his ratings slightly decreased in a fight with Santos while having his ratings bumped slightly in a fight with Cintron. This would make it easier to rate a fighter on his overall skills, while still allowing for the inexplicable way that some fighters seem to struggle against some opponents while looking fantastic against others. Personally, I would like to see two or three slots available for each category, tough and easy foes. A couple of thoughts, first I don't believe that the adjustments to the ratings need to be significant, just enough to increase the chances of the real life result. It wouldn't be fun if there was no chance of a different result. Second, I think the user should be able to designate a tough or easy foe on their own. The database could come with certain fighters designated, but the user should be able to cancel or change them if they want. This would be important for users who used random fighters as well as for those who want to choose who to designate based on events in their universe or simply assign them randomly. Finally, I don't think that every fighter has to have tough or easy foes. I think it's rare, but some guys just don't seem to have this kind of thing happen to them. This feels like the kind of thing that you can't exactly define, but you know it when you see it. I am pretty sure this can be replicated in the game right now through the use of conditioning ratings, but I thought this might be an easier and more straightforward way of bringing this dynamic to the game. One last thing, one of the things I love about games like this, and particularly this one, is that they teach you about the history of the sport. I think this would be an interesting addition in that regard. It would be fun to look at guys and see some indication of how they fared against various opponents. There are a great many fighters that come with the game that I have never heard of and it would be fun to be able to know right off how they fared against some of the other fighters in the game. This is a rule I have seen in other games and I think it adds a lot of depth and realism, so I thought it was worth considering here. Jeff |

I think this is a great idea for the RPG version ... kind of like having rivals ... I also think rivalries also need to be made in the game.

Absolutely, perhaps in a rivalry situation there could be a slight increase to punches landed, and a slight decrease to kdr and kor ratings. That seems likely to produce high action fights that almost always go several rounds or more. However, I don't want to delve to deep into this as I am not overly familiar with the complexities of the ratings as they relate to each other. Anyway, I leave it to you guys to consider as part of the upcoming RPG version. Thanks for reading. Jeff |
