| No, and he should have some dignity and retire now instead of hanging on to break Payton's record. |

Really, it depends on Hutchinson. If he can complete some passes, it will force Seattle to worry about more then just the run. I dont care who you are, if you can consistenly keep 8 in the box, you should be able to do well in stopping the run.

He's not even the best RB on that team. It's a shame.

that's what a great offensive line gets you in the early 90's.
still a very good running back during his peak years. Doesn't really matter if he breaks the record. There is a flood of young backs ready to take it. |

I am not one that believes the late Walter Payton's record is some "hallowed ground" record that should not be trod upon by just anyone. We all know that Barry Sanders or Jim Brown would have that record had either felt like sticking around and playing while still in their prime. I love Sweetness but if his record falls to a guy who is now limping along, so be it.

This record being broken is not exciting to me in any way, unlike a good baseball record. Those are very exciting.

Barry should come back, my guess is he would overtake Smith in a few years. He was only one good season away form breaking it.

As much as i thoroughly despise the Cowboys, I do have some respect for Emmitt. The guy was practically run into the ground by Jimmy Johnson, yet he kept on coming back for more. He deserves the record for his durability and consistency over the many years that he's played.

i'll tell you one thing.
Emmitt is probably the smartest running back in NFL history. The other big time runners were brute strength and power. They almost did not need to shimmy away from a defender. All they had to do was crash right into them or pretend to do so. The only exception to this might be Barry Sanders, who was both smart and powerful. |

How many yards short was Sanders? Something like 1500?

Wether he holds the record or not, it doesn't change the fact that he's one of the best RBs ever to play american football. (Sanders that is)

Sanders averaged 5.0 yards per carry for his career, but Payton only averaged 4.3 or 4.4. Sanders was an amazing running back, could have been the greatest of all time had he played a couple more years.

I'd take Payton over Sanders.
Payton could run, catch, and block. He did all of them extremely well. He wasn't just a runner. Yes, Sanders was impressive and undoubtedly a great back, but overall Payton is better without the all the flash.
