The European Baseball Community
January 1, 1957
Pre-empting the signing of the Treaty of Rome, the Governments of Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Luxembourg and West Germany agreed to launch a pan-national European baseball league. The European Baseball Community would initially consist of one six-team division named the "Schumann Division" after one of the chief proponents of European unity. In order to keep players fit each of the national governments agreed to run a four team league with teams in the major cities. Valery Giscard d'Estaing was appointed as the first Commissioner of the League and immediately decreed that players on each national team had to be nationals of that country. The cities chosen for the main national stadiums were unsurprisingly Belgium - Brussels France - Paris Netherlands - Amsterdam Italy - Rome West Germany - Bonn Luxembourg - Luxembourg City And the chosen cities to host the national leagues were Belgium - Bruges, Brussels, Gent, Liege France - Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseilles, Paris Netherlands - Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Maastricht, Rotterdam Italy - Milano, Napoli, Roma, Venezia West Germany - Frankfurt, Hamburg, Koln, Munich Luxembourg - Luxembourg, Esch-sur-Alzette, Dudelange, Didderbange Inaugural drafts were held in each of the six nations and the league was tentatively scheduled to start on the 1st April 1957

April 1st, 1957
Well, Opening Day has finally arrived and the six European nations are eagerly awaiting their first games of baseball. The opening series are: France @ Luxembourg Italy @ West Germany Belgium @ Netherlands France @ Luxembourg Luxembourg won 5-3 after France had taken a 2 run lead in the 3rd. Two singles followed by a walk in the bottom of the fourth loaded the bases for Luxembourg and a double by Robert Simon and back to back sacrifice hits from Ignatius Klebel and Josef Bihlmeyer brought 4 runs home. Michel Albertini from Niederanven pitched a complete game allowing only 5 hits and 3 runs whilst striking out 6 giving him the win. Claude Bodin from Paris was pulled after 7.2 innings after giving up 7 hits and 5 runs (all earned). Jean-Claude Lecocq came in to relieve but didn't get a chance to pitch in the 9th as France couldn't score enough. Italy @ West Germany This game was over by the bottom of the 1st as Germany took a 5-0 lead before closing out the game 8-0. Roth Brenden became the first player to hit a home run in the new league. Ludwik Puttkamer needed only 108 pitches to get through 9 innings and he gave up 2 hits and walked 2. Vanni Rocchigiani had problems with his control and gave up 11 hits in his 7 inning spell. Belgium @ Netherlands Another fairly one-sided matchup occurred in Amsterdam as the Netherlands ran away to a 7-1 lead by the bottom of the second. Belgium nibbled away at the lead to end up only losing 8-4. Four home runs were scored in the game (2 from each team) Rotterdam resident Sake Buddenburg pitched a complete game for the win giving up 7 hits, 4 runs and 2 homers. Jean-Luc Morel had the shortest outing by any starter today being pulled after just 2 innings. In just 39 pitches he gave up 8 hits and let 7 runs score. Alfred Neeleman pitched 4.1 innings in relief and gave up only 3 hits but his team could not score the runs to make the game closer.

Morning of April 4th, 1957
The first series of games finished the previous evening and after three games the standings in the inaugural European Baseball Community were Luxembourg 3-0 Netherlands 3-0 Italy 2-1 West Germany 1-2 France 0-3 Belgium 0-3 Philippe Lebeau from Luxembourg is leading the batting averages with 0.727 (8-11) May 1st, 1957 A whole month has passed since the start of the season and people are still attending in droves, though how much of this is down to the subsidies provided by the national governments. The Netherlands have done the most to keep their start going opening up a 4 game lead over the Italians Netherlands 20-8 Italy 16-12 Luxembourg 15-13 France 12-16 West Germany 11-17 Belgium 10-18 Neill Bartwijk from Utrecht has been the batting find of the month. In 28 games he has raked in 38 hits from 101 AB giving him an average of 0.376 - he isn't that great a power hitter but has great speed on the basepaths coupled with an eye for the gap allowing him to record 8 doubles and 3 triples which are league leading values. Yassine Schmit from Provence has been causing catchers no ends of problems by stealing 12 bases in the month. Home run leader is Miles Blankendaal with five round trippers in his 24 games. Sake Buddenberg from Rotterdam is the star pitcher so far with a 6-0 record with an ERA of 1.19 and WHIP of 0.79. In all but one of his 6 starts he has gone the distance recording a league leading 5 complete games. He also leads the league in strikeouts with 43. Top reliever is Raymond Maneilli who has posted a 2-0 record with 2 saves.

Nice job!! I demand a ream be placed immediately in Leigh. Failure to do so will result in trade boycotts against Oxford goods. Ramsey McDonald and Anthony Eden both support this initiative!!

apologies for rushing through the first season (but wanted to make sure it worked correctly)
September 23rd, 1957 The first season of the European Baseball Community has come to an end and the players from France, Belgium, Luxembourg and West Germany can go home and relax. For the Dutch and Italians they have a best of nine series to determine the European Champions. The Netherlands ended the season on 106-56 and Italy were 91-71. However in the 33 games between the teams the Netherlands are up 23-10 so the smart money is on the Netherlands to bring home the European Trophy September 24th, 1957 Fans have started to congregate at the Amsterdam Stadium for the first game in the series. Italy's starting lineup is as follows SS Jose Trezza (0.247, 16 RBI) CF Lazzaro Gennari (0.279, 57 RBI) RF Adolfo Apollini (0.301, 42 RBI) LF Gianluca Bobo (0.228, 47 RBI) 3B Renzo Pogiali (0.250, 40 RBI) 2B Faust Gandolfi (0.246, 57 RBI) C Arthur Pollini (0.252, 35 RBI) 1B Vittore Murrone (0.274, 41 RBI) Starting on the mound is Vanni Rocchigiani who went 11-14 with a 2.05 ERA during the regular season The Netherlands starting lineup is as follows 1B Sjelle de Gilde (0.257, 18 RBI) RF Remco Hoeks (0.227, 40 RBI) 2B Neill Baartwijk (0.276, 47 RBI) 3B Maup Noussen (0.260, 52 RBI) LF Andreas Schenkevelt (0.252, 44 RBI) SS Calvin Ottens (0.239, 55 RBI) CF Garm Buddenberg (0.207, 39 RBI) C Miles Blankendaal (0.203, 64 RBI) and their starting pitcher is Sake Buddenburg who went 16-10 with a 2.09 ERA. Top 1st Trezza is the first batter up and he grounds out to the second baseman. Gennari strikes out swinging as does Appoloni so it's no runs on no hits. Bottom 1st de Gilde comes up and he grounds out to third, before Hoeks is sent back on a 1-2-3 before Baartwijk grounds out to second. Top 2nd Bobo gets the first hit of the game - a shallow fly to left field. Pogiali flails at a pitch high and outside for an infield fly. Bobo attempts to steal second on a 0-2 offering to Gandolfi and succeeds - this could be a chance for Italy to take the early lead. Buddenberg loses his control and from 0-2 walks Gandolfi on a 10 pitch at-bat. Bobo senses that Buddenberg is nervous and steals third on Pollini's first pitch. Pollini sends a ball out to left field, but Bobo is able to tag up and cross the plate. 1-0 to Italy. Murrone flies out to end the inning. Bottom 2nd The first two batters Noussen and Schenkevelt ground out before Ottens reaches first on an infield hit, and not wishing to be outdone by Bobo starts to head down towards second. Rocchigiani throws to first but misses Murrone and Ottens has no trouble getting to second. G. Buddenberg rakes a triple out to deep centre field allowing Ottens to come home and score tying the game up. Blankendaal draws a walk but S. Buddenberg can't get bat to ball and strikes out to end the inning. Top 3rd A couple of walks are given away by Buddenberg but he gets out of the jam nicely. Bottom 3rd 3 up, 3 down for the Netherlands. Game still tied at 1 Top 4th One walk and a couple of strikeouts. The game is getting nervy now. Bottom 4th Rocchigiani goes K-K-K through the Dutch lineup. Top 6th Gennari hits a triple to lead off the inning. The Dutch will need good pitching to still be level by the middle of the inning. Buddenberg strikes out Apolloni but they intentionally walk Bobo, who immediately steals second on the next pitch. Pogiali strikes out, but Gandolfi comes up with a hit to left that scores both Gennari and Bobo. Nothing more happens in the inning and the Italians are leading 3-1 Bottom 6th Hoeks gets a double and advances to third on a fly-out but isn't able to be driven home. Bottom 7th Ottens leads off with a single and advances to second on Clerq's pinch hit fly out. Blankendaal steps to the plate and sends the 0-2 pitch out of the ground tying the game up and scoring the first home run in the European Championship series. Top 9th Pogiali, who has gone 0-2so far, comes up and finally reaches first on a hard line drive to center field. Gandolfi lays down a bunt to get Pogiali over to second. Pollini strikes out, and Aglietti comes in as a 2-out pinch hitter and draws a walk. With the pitcher Rocchigiani due up next he is pulled from the game and replaced by Ottoz who strikes out. If the Dutch can score in the bottom of the 9th they will take this game. Bottom 9th Pinch hitter Lips almost wins the game with his first pitch but Apolloni gets to the wall and pulls the ball down. Ottens, who was 2-2, strikes out and we're one out away from extra innings, and Post obliges by striking out. Top 10th Ginola leads off with a double, Labraccio strikes out swinging, Apolloni pops out to short right field (he has now gone 0-5 tonight), before Bobo draws his second walk of the night. With runners on first and second, third baseman Pogiali strikes out. Bottom 10th Hoeks flies out, as does Kole, but de Gilde reaches first on a hit to centre. Kennet Maeyer comes to the plate and hammers the ball to deep centre, but Batticelli is not able to get the ball back in time and de Gilde makes it all the way round from first to cross the plate and give the Netherlands a 4-3 victory in the first game. Freek Wielaard is given the W, and Raymond Maneilli gets the L 49,923 people attended the game and at 10pm the winning Dutch team complete their lap of honour.

. I had to go to Wikipedia to find the four biggest places in Luxembourg (I got stuck after Luxembourg and Esch-sur-Alzette). The reason I chose 4 teams per country was to ensure a large base of local players so that even with the artificially lowered MLEs in the overall league it would be more likely that there would be a local player more skilled than any abomination in the overall league free agent pool.I aim to keep the league going in line with EEC expansion with one exception and that is that Greece won't enter the league in 1981 because they'll stuff it up by making it an odd number. The UK gets over-represented in 1973 because there isn't a UK country so England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all get their own teams (which is fortuitous because Ireland and Denmark will join at the same time so it adds 6 teams to the league, not 3) Greece will probably be allowed in in 1995 with Austria, Sweden and Finland. How I setup the league Unfortunately, most of the setup steps can be done by anyone with the game, but there is one small section in the middle that requires fiddling with world.dat and teams.dat to get it to work 1. I created a 2 team league in each of the six countries and then added an AAA level league to each of them (creating 12 leagues so far). In the top level league for each country I named one team to be the national team and just left the other one as it is - it's role in life is to stop the game crashing, as well as just hoarding a percentage of players, you go there certain that you won't be winning any big prizes (think Devil Rays )In each top level league I disallowed free agency movement, and then turned financials off (I don't think it worked correctly if you just turn financials off before unticking the options inside), disabled trading, set the foreigner percentage to 0, disabled spring training, all star game and playoffs. In each of the AAA leagues I affiliated each team with the national team - this is one of the few bits I don't like about the way it has to be setup to work - a player can get called up from AAA to the national team but there's no way of controlling who he gets sent back down to. The AAA leagues also had their foreigner percentage set to 0 The amateur draft was left on for all top level leagues. 2. I created a six team league - I based it in Italy as the EEC was founded by the treaty of Rome. This league had trading disabled, spring training and playoffs enabled, free agency movement off and then financials off (the entire league is subsidised by the EEC), and inaugural and amateur draft turned off. I set the foreigner percentage to 0 here as well. The MLEs were set to 0.05 for this league to stop their being too many good players appearing randomly (though I did forget to turn off hidden players and scouting in my first iteration )3. I then started the game and simmed to the 2nd January to get the amateur drafts done. I checked each of the national teams to make sure they only had their nationals in them which they did. 4. I then went into Game Setup and chose Edit League Schedule and cleared the schedules from the top level national leagues and the overall league, leaving the AAA schedules in place. 5. I then went to Edit League Structure and removed the six Italian teams that were in the overall league. I exported all the data to csv and exited the game 6. I edited teams.csv and changed the league id for the six national teams to the league id for the overall league, and in league_events.csv removed all the award events for the six national leagues (though this step may not be necessary). I then re-imported them using my Editor program. 7. Using some VB and my editor dll I added the team ids for the six national teams to the constituent teams list for the overall league (whilst leaving them also attached to their own league - this is the crucial step in getting it to work - allowing the teams to play in the overall league but maintaining their connection to the national league in order to partake in the draft) 8. I then restart the game and go and create a schedule for the overall league, but not the top level national ones. 9. I simmed through a few years just to make sure it worked (which it did) and thankfully the game never tried to recreate schedules for these top level national leagues (I'm not sure why, but thanks Markus anyway!)

Good stuff.
Full table for the first season would be nice, though. ![]() Interestingly, the Italian batting averages look a lot better than the Dutch. Do Netherlands have a good rotation? |
