States League - Opening Day countdown
KENTUCKY HEAVY ON PITCHING, DEFENSE
Oct 29 - Nineteenth-ranked Kentucky released their all-time all-star roster Tuesday, as the 38-team States League closed in on a Nov. 2 opening day. Kentucky is ranked 5th in the six-team Ohio Valley division, which figures to be the most wide open of the six regions. Anything can happen in a division whose supposedly worst team (Arkansas, with only 140 all-time major leaguers) stars Dizzy Dean, Arky Vaughn, Lou Brock, and Brooks Robinson. Even Ohio, the division's seeded team, may be vulnerable, despite the power trio of Mike Schmidt, Frank Howard, and David Justice. Selecting 32 all-time greats from a pool of 242 all-time major leaguers revealed a very strong pitching pedigree in the Bluegrass State. The four-man rotation will be anchored by Carl Mays (1915-29), a career 207-126 pitcher who is most famous for the fatal beaning of Ray Chapman in 1920 that ushered in the lively ball era. The remaining starters are lefthander Jesse Tannehill (1894-1911), 1901 NL ERA champion and six-time 20-game winner; Paul Derringer (1931-45), six-time All-Star and hero of the Reds' 1940 World Series win; and Hall-of-Famer Jim Bunning (1953-71), a seven-time All-Star and three-time strikeout champion. Kentucky's offense may be a bit sparse, but their defense shines with Gold-Glove types at third (Travis Fryman), shortstop (Pee Wee Reese), and in the outfield (Earl Combs, Stan Spence, Steve Finley). The main long-ball threat is Mariner favorite Jay Buhner (1987-2001), the state's all-time home run king with 310. The Kentuckyans figure to challenge Missouri and Indiana for second place and a berth in the 12-team second round. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ States League is a single-season tournament to determine which state has produced the best major leaguers all-time. There are no trades, finances are off -- the task of owners is to select the best combination of players from their state's player pool. We have a few states still open, and are aiming for a Nov. 2 opening day. Come to the States League home page or email the commissioner at Statesleague@aol.com for more information. Available teams as of Tuesday morning are:
Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, D.C., Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Nebraska, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia. In anticipation of a Nov. 2 opening day, all but Iowa, South Carolina, and West Virginia have already had their rosters filled, though GMs are naturally free to fine-tune their rosters until opening day. |
