Sixto MVP????

Hi folks, new to this board, but have been addicted to this game for a few months.

I recently started an historical league in 1984 with the Phillies. Not much out of the ordinary after simming the 1st season, but one stat line caught my eye.

Sixto Lezcano hit .280 with 33 dingers and 106 RBI to win the Best hitter award (MVP, whatever)

Now, I will tell you that I remember watching Sixto plaing at the Vet when I was a kid, a nice hitter (mostly prior to the 80's), but I was shocked at this season....I did not edit him.

Anybody else have an experience like this where an historically nice player suddenly has a season above and beyond
his achievements....(I think Sixto really hit 20+ Hr and 100+ RBI once in about 1977). Was is just a miracle???? If it was I'd like to use it again so that Von Hayes won't stink by the late 80's

that's the great thing about this game, you can't predict who's going to have a breakout year or who's going to stink it up, just like real baseball. you can look at past year's stats and ratings but you still never know. some guys will be consistent, some will go up and down, just like real life.

anybody had any Bret Saberhagen/Al Leiter type guys who go back and forth between awesome and mediocre seasons?

I've been running a historical sim from 1901. It's currently up to 1968, and it's been a lot of fun. Some real life great players such as Ruth and Gehrig were good players, but never really developed. But Stan The Man Musial was a man and in the course of his career led Cleveland to seven or eight world championships.

Goose Goslin was the Ruth of the 20s and 30s. In 1939 a second baseman named Joe Gantenbein had his rookie season, and he would play until 1960, finally retiring at the age of 43 or 44. Wally Berger had an outstanding rookie season, hitting 52 home runs, a record that thus far has only been tied by Mickey Mantle. Berger went on to have a fine career but never again matched the prowess of that rookie year.

The fact that OOTP is so much like baseball, is the games greatest quality. Look at this season, and your fantasy baseball team. Did you draft Randy Winn? Or maybee David Eckstein(who we all know now, but did you draft him?) what about Shea Hillenbrand*?

Well, all those guys did surprisingly well! It happens in real baseball, and you notice it all the time in OOTP.

One time in an online league i traded for a scrub Catcher, because i had studs at every other position and no money left, so i trade for this 25 year old scrub prospect. I start him because he is my only catcher.... And he winds up leading my team of mammoth hitters, (Edmonds, Klesko, Justice, A Ramirez, ect) in all the batting stats! He my only .300 hitter, and is the only player listed as "Hot"....

*who i drated because his name is Shea, LOL!

SIXTO!

Actually Sixto had great stats in 1984...but was a part-timer.

If you had started the sim in just about any other year, you wouldn't have had the Sixto Effect.

I can only imagine what Kevin Maas is like if you start in 1990...
