Veteran Gamer Has Questions About Version 8

Okay, I'm not really new to the game, I've been playing OOTP for about five years now. I just took the plunge and bought OOTP 8.

Here are my questions:

1) What does the quickstart do?

2) What does New Major League Game do?

3) Is the Lahman database part of the new game, or do I have to download it, or use my old Lahman db already on my computer?

4) Finally, do the 2007 rosters come with each team's minors with real players?

Thanks

You mean, what does "a" quickstart do? It's merely a fancy saved game that someone, developer or modder, has created and provided for quick and easy game start. You never used a quickstart in five years? It's the same as previous versions.

2) What does New Major League Game do?
It's a quickstart that comes with OOTP 8, based on real MLB rosters from the beginning of 2007. Most impressive is the baseball history included.

3) Is the Lahman database part of the new game, or do I have to download it, or use my old Lahman db already on my computer?
Yes, it comes with the full installation download of OOTP 8. As I said to somebody else recently, you will be able to install newer versions of Lahman by downloading them and copying the files into your data/stats folder.

4) Finally, do the 2007 rosters come with each team's minors with real players?
Yes, I believe so based on my look at the Yankees minor league system. I saw some familiar names; some of the others could be fictional, however.

Thanks
Enjoy the game.

Hmmm. Actually, I cannot remember whether quickstarts were around before OOTP 2006, and you might have been playing OOTP 5/6 up until now, so please pardon my initial incredulity over that question. I hope my response was adequate; here's a bit more from the manual:

Quote:
3.1.3. Quick-Start Game

Quick-start games are predefined baseball universes. You can use quick-starts to jump into a game quickly. Or, you can save your own OOTP games as quick-start games and share them with friends. For example, you could set up a game scenario wherein you challenge your friends to see who can take the weakest club in a quick-start game and bring it to a championship in the fewest number of years.

Quick-start games are complete leagues. That is, they already have teams and players defined. You cannot take a quick-start league and start over using the same structure, but with different players. A quick-start is much like making a copy of a saved game, only without the hassle of copying and renaming folders.
If you look in your data\quickstart_games folder, you will see two fictional quickstarts that come with the game. The third one, Majors.quick, is the "New Major League Game" that you see in the main screen menu.

You can download and install quickstart games that modders have made in this same folder. There are some great ones available here:
