Sporting News 1986 Take Two

Anybody else following this?

http://www.sportingnews.com/baseball/1986/

With daily sims and game-by-game write ups, this project is pretty promising. '86 was the year I saw my first MLB games and one of the first years I followed baseball closely. The pseudo-celebrity managers also add to the intrigue.

What's This All About?

This offseason, SportingNews.com will be partying like it's 1986 all over again. Using our Strat-O-Matic Baseball Online engine, we'll be replaying the 1986 baseball season, game by game, with 26 prominent members of the baseball community managing the original rosters through the original schedule, and basically see what happens. The setting is the same, but history will be rewritten with each swing of the bat. Will the Mets and Red Sox battle it out again? Or will be there a new team invited to the dance?

Play starts on Monday, November 5, and we'll have all the action covered right here, with daily boxscores, stats, standings, injury reports, analysis, and personal journals kept by our managers. As an added bonus, we'll be re-printing actual articles from the original Sporting News magazine from 1986, as if they hot off the presses. Will Darryl Strawberry be the first player to go 50-50? Do the 8 players who are asking for $1 million or more in arbitration actually deserve that much money? Is Bert Blyleven going to the Hall of Fame?

I must say this is interesting. It looks like alot of work, but fun.I like the tongue and cheek comments that I read so far. I wonder if any Red Sox fans are behind this? But I will checking back to see if the White Sox ( only season Gm'd by Hawk Harrelson) can get back to the play-offs.And make sure the dreaded Cubs stay where the should..... LAST.

Thanks for the link. The layout is very well done. I've never done a replay season in OOTP. I may try one for something different.

CHICAGO, IL. - 23-year-old Red Sox pitcher Roger Clemens pitched the first complete game shutout of the majors this season, allowing just 5 hits and 2 walks, and striking out 8, in Boston's 6-0 win over Chicago Saturday night.

When asked for his plans to celebrate his achievement, Clemens stated he is retiring from baseball, for around 4 days.

Nice.

This story confuses me:

Great Scott! and Other Media Cliches;
Astros Ace Shuts Out Pirates

Mike Scott was brilliant in a complete game, 9-strikeout shutout of the Pirates on Sunday night, as the Houston Astros defeated the still-winless Atlanta Braves, 1-0.

When approached by a reporter about rumors that he was scuffing baseballs on the mound, Scott replied, "No comment," and then proceeded to sandpaper the man's ear off. Boxscore

Are the Atlanta Braves now refered to as the Pirates??? The Astro's beat the Braves 1-0 as Mike Scott strikes out 9 Pirates?

Great site, needs some editing though.

Maybe they signed actual pirates?

That would be really cool.

This is starting to get way to much like being an stats or in joke, Today's had a refrence to the Pythagorean expectation which at least had a link, last week it was the Three True Outcomes no link. it seems they are writing to try and make jokes and show off thier stats knowlage. They are having fun with it, even if they are not following the spirit of what happen in 86

Yee gads.

As a Cards fan, I remember this season very well. I went to perhaps 20 games this (that) year.

Coleman hitting .194? Team OPS of .654? Team batting average of .238?

What sim engine are they using?

If it is the Stratomatic engine it is VERY accurate.

I have played Strat-O-Matic for a hell of a long time, from about 1965 through the present day.

IF this is a faithful port from the dice game, then, sure, I'll buy into it.

The engine is their SOM online product which I believe is a port of the dice game. The player page for Dale Murphy shows the actual cards from the dice game.

Essentially this sim-League is a means to advertise their fantasy online product. Another reason I wish Markus would scrap plans to create the offshoot OOTP-Online, between SOM and WhatIf, established competitors are already in the marketplace.
