Lightbulb League files upload as zip file

Dear Commissioners of online leagues on the .400 Online League Server,

Uploading the more than 2,000 leaguefiles onto the league's webserver has always been a bothering task for the commish. All of the files are small, but the huge number of files makes it very slow and often the upload stops due to connection errors or something. On the other side it's a lot of traffic, and traffic is a big problem for each internet user because usually there is a traffic limit on the server and it will cost money to exceed it. A big part of the amount of traffic is traffic overhead and so the commish has to transfer much more data than he has in his LEAGUESITE directory...
Everything would be much easier if you could zip the files together into one archive, upload this ZIP file and unzip it "locally" on the server.
And this is what we've set up last week! We've tested it and it runs fine. It work's this way:
- Every 15 minutes the "unzipleaguefiles"-script runs on the server automatically
- It scans the root-directory of each online league and looks for a zip-file which has the same name as the league's abbreviation with a leading "_" and in small caps
- If it finds that file, the file will be unzipped into that league's root-directory
- After unzipping the zip-file, it will be deleted!

Example:
- Let's say your league's abbreviation is XYZ
- On your PC you're having the folder LEAGUESITE with all the html files in it. You want to get them into a folder LEAGUESITE on our server.
- Let's say you're having the file "league.zip", which you would like to put into the folder \files on our server

1. Copy the league.zip into a folder \files on your PC
2. Create a zip-file named _xyz.zip in the root directory of your PC. Check "Store Pathnames" in the zip-file's settings!
3. Using the Windows Explorer, copy the \files-folder into your zip-file. Then copy the \LEAGUESITE-folder into your zip-file, too.
4. If you open the zip-file, there should be the pathname stored with each file.
5. Upload the file to the server into the root directory of your subdomain, i.e. www.xyz.ootp-leagues.com
6. Wait 15 minutes and press the "refresh" button of your FTP client. The zip-file should be deleted now! And the new files should be in their folders.

Of course you use it on your own risk, we are not liable for anything, and each action on our server will be logged.
If you're having any problems with this feature, please contact me.
Please use it, it will help us to save a lot of traffic and it will surely make your commish-job easier!

OK, Stacy. Explain it to me in idiot terms for Glory Days.

our abbreviation is "gdba" on the server. Our files already go into a folder named "LeagueSite".

Did Andreas say to zip the "leaguesite" folder after I do the Master HTML up and name it "gdba".zip?

Im not following all the "root directories" on my CPU or the "league.zip" reference.

I'm sure its easy, but I'm not following Andreas.

I had to re-read it several times to because it confused me when he was talking about two zip files. The one zip file he's talking about is the zip of your league that the owners will want to download. So in his example, the league file is being unzipped to one directory and the league HTML files are being unzipped to another directory. So your not "double" zipping the HTML files. If your HTML files go to LeagueSite on your web site, then you zip them up and any other files that you want into the zip file with his naming convention. So for example, with Boys of Summer I'm going to zip my HTML files that are in the /LeagueSite subdirectory, but I'm also going to include Wallman's reference files that are in a subdirectory called /Boys of Summer and my reference files that are in a subdirectory called /reference.... So what will ultimately be inside the file name _bos.zip is my league that is zipped up for download in "BoysofSummer1910.zip" (which will be the only zip file inside the zip file, and also all other subdirectories containing files I want to upload (which will not be in there own zip file, but will just be zipped into _bos.zip with the correct path.

I probably just made it clear as mud, but what originally confused me was when it mentioned two zip files. The large zip file will contain everything, but inside it will only be one zip file and that is the one that you expect your users to download. You probably don't gain a lot by including that zip file since it isn't small individual files like the LeagueSite file, so if it confuses you, just do the HTML pages only (They will not be a zip within a zip, but rather just zipped with the path into _gdba.zip for your league).

Correct me if I'm wrong. I have two options here:

OPTION 1: GDays.zip (the league zip file)
Leaguesite folder

Those two things zipped up in a file named "gdba.zip" (quotations included in the file name)

_________________________________________________

OPTION 2: Leaguesite folder zipped up in a file names "gdba.zip"

In both options, the gdba.zip is placed in the lowest level of my directory?

IF I use option 1, my link to my league file must be changed as it will now be inside the "Leaguesite" folder on the server?

Also, I didnt catch the part about the paths when doing the zip file.

First, don't forget the "underscore" in the name of the zip file that you upload to your website. For you it will be called:

_gdba.zip

Second, your league's zip file can go into any subdirectory you want it to as long as the path is correct in the zip file. If your league file goes in your root directory, just zip it with the root directory as the path... "\"

The nice thing is that you can have different kinds of files going to different subdirectories as long as the path is included in the zip file.

OK.

One last thing:

The path on the _gdba.zip file will be /Leaguesite ? which means ANY files NOT in a zip file inside will go to the /leaguesite folder?

Any zip files INSIDE will go to whatever path I have put in them when I created them?

Are there any " " around the _gdba.zip or was Andreas using those for grammatical effect?

The quotes do not go around the name of the zip file.

The only files that go to "LeagueSite" would be your HTML files. The files can go anywhere you want. What you need to do is create subdirectories on your PC that mirror the ones on your site. In my zipfile, I have the leaguefile go to the root directory, the LeagueSite files go to /LeagueSite (I had used the same naming convention), the reference files go to /reference. So you have complete control over where each file goes.

I'll see if I can do a sample for you (small enough so you can download it quickly) that illustrates this.

Andreas.... One Question....

If you are uploading the zip file when the "15 minutes" comes up, does it attempt to unzip your partially uploaded file. I ask this because the first time I tried, when my file was done uploading, I didn't see it and nothing unzipped. I thought that maybe since the "top of the hour" occured during the upload, that it may have tried to unzip my partial file and deleted it when done. The 2nd time I tried, I made sure it was inbetween. I waited until 17 minutes after the hour thinking maybe you have it going at 15, 30, 45 minutes after the hour and at the top of the hour.

All this is created on your C drive. Right?

I already have a "leaguesite" folder on my C Drive.

Are you saying that I should keep my league zip file on my C drive so that it will go to the root directory? Its currently in "My Documents" on my computer at home.

Also, I should create a "Reference" folder on my C Drive to keep my Wallman files in, so that when the season is over, I can zip them up and they will go to my reference folder on the server?

I ask this b/c your league file is linked as follows on your site:

http://www.bos.ootp-leagues.com/Leag...summer1910.zip

Just wondering b/c I'll try this tonight with Glory Days.

Sounds like a MAJOR time saver. I always hated waiting for the files in the Leaguesite folder to upload!!

You caught me Cooley.... I said my league file is in the root directory, but I only said that because I didn't want to confuse you further. I think your zip file was in the root directory, so to explain it easier, I said mine was to. But like you point out, long ago I had changed it so that the league file was in the same directory (LeagueSite) as my HTML files. I originally did this to make FTPing easier so that I could upload my league file and the HTML files at the same time.

Doesn't matter where you do it on your PC. I used my D drive and created a subdirectory called _bos in which I placed everything I wanted to uploaded. You zip up the zip file in a way that it does not include the drive or main subdirectories in the path (the C:\_bos subdirectory), but rather in a way so that it contains the subdirectories in the same structure as on your website. My zipfile looks like this (name _bos.zip)

BoysofSummer1910.zip /leaguesite
1.htm /leaguesite
league.htm /leaguesite

Why don't you give me a call when you get home and I'll walk you through it.

To give an idea of the speed.... I was uploading my league files, my HTML files, Wallman's refence files as well as my own utilities reference files. All together, this was over 50MB of files and it took WS_FTP over 1 1/2 hours to upload everything.

By zipping them, it was only 14MB in size and took only 7 minutes to upload. Thanks for a great new feature.

Thanks for all your help, IatricSB!

Two things:

Actually it's quite easy. What is in your zip file, will be in your web space after unzipping. When there is a file in your zipfile and a path name is stored with the file, the file will be in the corresponding path in your webspace. That's all. And that's the most flexible and complete solution.

Second issue: You're right, if the server tries to unzip the file just in the moment when you're uploading it, it will not be unzipped (of course, because it's not complete) but it will be deleted nevertheless. I'll try to change that.

Stacy,

You're throwing me off with the "Wallman" reference.

Are you running his utility after every sim?

I thought it could only be used at the end of the season.

Andreas,

Im sure this will be a HUGE time saver for commishes of larger leagues, i.e. present day leagues with many more teams that historicals with 16 teams or so.

Its a HUGE time saver for 16 team leagues, but I can imagine how long it would take to upload all the files for a large league. GDBA has about 950 files for its 16 teams (players pages included), so I would go nuts trying to upload all that for large leagues.

On another note, those of us uploading using a phone line will take more than 15 minutes to upload. Therefore, the problem of it unzipping and deleting it prior to being completely uploaded WILL be a problem for us.

Any update on that will be appreciated.

CooleyVol, I run Wallman's utility after every sim. I ran it after the 1909 season and then made a backup of the database. In 1910, after each sim I run his utility which only gives me 1910 data for a partial season. But then after the next sim, I restore the database from the backup and run it again. By doing this, I can trick his utility into thinking I'm running it for the first time in 1910 and can repeat this process as many times as I want.

On a related note, its kind of interesting to see the Wallman pages on the Boys of Summer site right now. We just finished the regular season but have not done the World Series. If you look at the team pages for the Series participants, it shows Cleveland as the AL champ and Brooklyn as the NL champ with nobody being crowned league champs (since the series is not yet complete). After the series, I will run Wallman's utility one more time (the last time) for 1910 then make a new backup and get read for 1911.

2 questions for andreas

1. I read all the post and think I understand this new proggy. I'm going to explain it for my sake and you tell me if I'm right or wrong. Thanks

I have a zip file named _852bl.zip. In this zip is all the html file for the web and my zip called 852bl.zip(the owners dl this one).
I upload the _852Bl.zip and your program unzips it into the directory it is in. It will leave alone the 852bl.zip because it doesn't have the _ clarifier. And I'll be able to upload for 30+ min w/o worry of your program deleting the uploaded portion.

Tell me if I'm correct or wrong.

2. Did you get my emails concerning the league forum you created. I went to change colors and it seemed to screw everything up. If you can fix it great or let me know how.

Thanks andreas
