The New Fictional Toronto Blue Jays

I decided to start a new Toronto Blue Jays Franchise. I used the same set up:

- Full Majors and Minor Leagues
- NCAA and Highschool feeder leagues
- Full scouting and coaching staff
- Fictional Players (It is just more fun)
- 20 Round Draft (enough players created for 30 rounds)

I started the league in 2000 and am currently simming to 2007 when I will take over the Toronto Blue Jays. In the first year of the sim the Jays finished in 2nd place in the AL East and missed the playoffs. They had a $91 million dollar payroll and ranked 10th in the league in that department. The LA Angels had the highest at $112 million. In the World Series the Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the Minnesota Twins in 7 games.

More to come!

PS. If there is any specific information about teams you would like to see (ie. a team by team preview or top prospects in the league) I am happy to accomodate it.

League History - Past World Series Winners

The date is November 3rd 2007 and the World Series has just concluded. This year it was the St. Louis Cardinals defeating the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 6 games to capture the crown.

World Series Winners 2000-2006
Code:
Year American League Champ National League Champ World Series Winner
2000 Minnesota Twins Pittsburgh Pirates Minnesota Twins
2001 Baltimore Orioles Colorado Rockies Baltimore Orioles
2002 New York Yankees St. Louis Cardinals New York Yankees
2003 Cleveland Indians San Francisco Giants Cleveland Indians
2004 Minnesota Twins St. Louis Cardinals St. Louis Cardinals
2005 Cleveland Indians San Francisco Giants Cleveland Indians
2006 Tampa Bay Devil Rays St. Louis Cardinals St. Louis Cardinals
In the American League East the dominant team has been the Baltimore Orioles finishing in 1st place 5 of the 7 seasons that have been played. They have only had marginal success in the post season though winning their only World Series title in 2001 defeating te Colorado Rockies. The rest of the division has been pretty stable witht he Devil Rays, Blue Jays, Yankees and Red Sox battleing for 2nd place int he division. the Yankees have finished in second place 4 times, the Jays once and the Devil Rays twice. The only tem to not make the post season out of the AL East has been the Boston Red Sox wh have been in the basement of not just the AL East but the league for the last couple of years. They have managed to accumulate some high draft picks and do have a pretty talented group of young players coming up through their system and could be a condender very soon.

2006 Team Payrolls:

Toronto Blue Jays Fire GM - Ryan Stewart to Take Over

November 21st, 2007

The Toronto Blue Jays announced today that they have fired General Manager Claudio Vargas and replaced him with 26 year old Ryan Stewart. After another dissapointing season that saw the Blue Jays go 82-80 and finish in 4th place in the American League East and miss the playoffs for the 4th consecutive year Blue Jays Owner Ted Rogers decided it was time for a change. "We have been looking at shaking things up for a while. the team has falled into a funk where we just can't get over the hump and contend. We think Ryan is very capable GM and he has the ownership groups full support to take this team in his direction"

New GM Ryan Stewart talked about his plan for the future of the Blue Jays "Right now my first goal is to evaluate our current roster, coaching and scouting staffs and minor league system to see what we have to work with. Then we can decide what kind of direction we want to go. I think we have a good core group of players here and with the addition of one or two more pieces we could contend for the AL East title. My goal is to have us in the Playoffs in the next 2-5 years"

With everything going on surrounding the Toronto Blue Jays it could be a very busy offseason.

Toronto Blue Jays Roster
Part 1: Starters

SP Tony Chavez
Age: 25 Height: 6'4" Weight: 205 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 8/10/9 Fastball: 92-94 MPH
Drafted: 1st Round 21st Overall in 2001 By Toronto.
2006 Stats: 15-3 3.47 ERA
Contract: $4,843,800 *Arbitration Eligable
GM Comment: At 25 years old he is already the Ace of the Staff. He throws 5 different pitches for strikes and can change speeds well. He is arbitration eligiable this year and I want to get his name on a long term deal ASAP.

SP Cisco 'Millionaire' Gallegos
Age: 24 Height: 5'11" Weight: 205 lbs
Bats: L Throws: L
Ratings: 8/9/8 Fastball: 93-95 MPH
Drafted: 3rd Round 81st Overall in 2001 By Toronto.
2006 Stats: 12-8 3.11 ERA
Contract: $350,000*Auto Renewal
GM Comment: From the same draft class as SP Tony Chavez Gallegos is a hard throwing lefty who has 3 very good pitches. he is still young and cheap and controlable for a few more years to come.

SP Jorge Tamayo
Age: 25 Height: 6'1" Weight: 195 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 8/6/8 Fastball: 90-92 MPH
Drafted: Traded to Toronto from Oakland in 2006.
2006 Stats: 3-5 4.83 ERA
Contract: $1,656,000*Arbitration Eligable
GM Comment: He only pitched in 10 games for Toronto in 2006 and didn't fare all that bad. He doesn't have the greatest of stuff but looks like he could be an adequate 4th or 5th starter.

SP Harvy Jacobs
Age: 28 Height: 6'2" Weight: 196 lbs
Bats: S Throws: R
Ratings: 5/9/7 Fastball: 90-92 MPH
Drafted: 1st Round 25th Overall in 2001 By New York Yankees in 2000. He was traded to the Blue Jays from Pittsburgh in 2005.
2006 Stats: 15-11 3.59 ERA
Contract: $690,000*Arbitration Eligable
GM Comment: He pitched very well in 2007 to get to 15 wins, tieing for the lead on the club. His stuff is not that great and he won't blow guys away but he makes uo for that with good movement nad above average control. At $690,000 he is still very cheap and productive. He will likely be the #4 starter next season.

SP Fred 'Hawk' Harris
Age: 43 Height: 6'0" Weight: 229 lbs
Bats: L Throws: L
Ratings: 7/8/8 Fastball: 91-93 MPH
Drafted: 4th Round 95th Overall in 2000 Inagural Draft by San Fancisco. Traded to Toronto by San Fran Cisco in 2000.
2006 Stats: 6-12 7.05 ERA
Contract: $480,000*Arbitration Eligable
GM Comment: Wow, 43 years old and still going. His ratings are actually fairly good for a 43 year old. He threw 27 games for the Jays in 2006 and wasn't a bad 5th starter. I may try to trade him in the offseason but I don't imagine there will be much interrest.

GM Comments:

It is quite a mixed bag of youth and experience. The Jays Look pretty good at the top of the rotation woth SP Tony Chavez and SP Cisco Gallegos but the talent level drops off a bit from there. One of my biggest priorities before the 2007 season will be to try an aquire a #3 or 4 starter either through a trade or free agency.

Toronto Blue Jays Roster
Part 2: Bullpen

MR Desmond Wass
Age: 22 Height: 6'0" Weight: 180 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 10/8/10 Fastball: 96-98 MPH
Drafted: Signed By Atlanta as a Non-Drafted Free Agent in 2004. Traded to Toronto in 2004.
2006 Stats: 0-2 9.75 ERA
Contract: $350,000 Auto Renew
GM Comment: Very young at 22 to be pitching in the major leagues. he moved through the Jays system very fasr and may have been rushed a little bit. He has fantastig stuff and control and throws very hard. I see him as being a future setup man but he is going to take some time to get there.

MR Jorge Navarro
Age: 32 Height: 5'10" Weight: 179 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 6/8/6 Fastball: 90-92 MPH
Drafted: 19th Round 566th Overall in 200 Inagural Draft by the Washington Nationals. Traded to Toronto in 2003 by Washington.
2006 Stats: 3-1 1 SV 6.55 ERA
Contract: $607,000/1 year
GM Comment: He is not a very good reliever but because of the lack of depth in the bullpen in the minors he is on the big leaue club. He doesn't have great stuff or control and won't blow guys away. I don't see him being anything more than a mop up guy if he makes the team this year.

MR Hector Aponte
Age: 28 Height: 5'10" Weight: 187 lbs
Bats: R Throws: L
Ratings: 4/7/9 Fastball: 90-92 MPH
Drafted: 19th Round 569th overall in the 2000 inagural draft by Houston. Traded to Toronto by Houston in 2003.
2006 Stats: 3-1 2 SV 4.84 ERA
Contract: $500,000/1 year
GM Comment: The only lefty in the Jays pen. He doesn't have very good stuff but has very good control. Lefties hit only .215 against him (unfortunately righties hit .356). He will likely be back as my situational lefty next year.

MR Gunner 'Voodoo' Parker
Age: 25 Height: 6'6" Weight: 210 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 10/10/10 Fastball: 98-100 MPH
Drafted: 18th Round 521st Overall in 2004 By Toronto.
2006 Stats: 6-4 5 SV 3.66 ERA
Contract: $350,000*Auto Renew
GM Comment: The future closer of the staff. This big right hander from Missouri can really bring it. He can top 100 MPH on the radar gun and throws 3 pitches for strikes.

MR Bill Holmes
Age: 24 Height: 6'0" Weight: 205 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 6/9/9 Fastball: 93-95 MPH
Drafted: Signed as a Non-Drafted free agent by Atlanta in 2001. Traded to Toronto in 2006.
2006 Stats: 0-4 3 SV 6.28 ERA (with San Diego)
Contract: $1,814,700/1 year
GM Comment: He looks like he could be a good set up man. He doesn't have great stuff but throws hard and has very good control and movement. He will likely be the setup man next year in Toronto.

CL Kyeong-eon 'Gremlin' Kim
Age: 29 Height: 6'1" Weight: 207 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 9/9/7 Fastball: 97-99 MPH
Drafted: Drafted in the 16th round of 453rd overall in the 2000 inagural draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was released by Arizona and signed by Toronto in 2000 as a free agent.
2006 Stats: 9-3 37 SV 2.51 ERA
Contract: $1,590,000/2 year
GM Comment: The 4 time allstar has been the stopper in the back of the bullpen since his roolie season in 2001. He has amassed 216 career saves. He is still signed for 2 more years at a very reasonable price, but could fetch a fair return on the open market

GM Comments:

Quite honestly with the exception of CL Kyeong-eon Kim and MR Gunner Parker the bullpen just flat out sucks. This is going to be atop priority in the offseason to upgrade the bullpen. Kim could make very good traid bait and will likely be shopped in the offseason, but I won't trade him unless I can get good value for him in return.

It most likely was the right idea to start a new league.

Toronto Blue Jays Roster
Part 3: Position Players

C Tom Johnson
Age: 28 Height: 6'4" Weight: 208 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 8/9/6/9/8 Rating @ C: 7 Arm: 6
Drafted: 5th round 150th Overall by Los Angeles Angels in 2001. Signed as a free agent by Toronto in 2006.
2006 Stats: .238 3 HR 19 RBIs
Contract: $350,000 Auto Renew
GM Comment: Not a bad offensive catcher. he isn't going to win any MVP Awards but he looks like he could put up solid numbers. He is only average defensively and doesn't have a great arm.

C Robert Francis
Age: 25 Height: 6'3" Weight: 200 lbs
Bats: L Throws: R
Ratings: 8/8/7/7/9 Rating @ C: 10 Arm: 9
Drafted: 10th Round 278th Overall in 2001 by San Diego. Traded to Toronto in 2004 by the Padres.

2006 Stats: .234 17 HR 61 RBIs
Contract: $3,161,600/1 year
GM Comment: Basically the left handed version of Tom Johnson except he is a far better defensive catcher. He hits for a little bit more power than his right handed counterpart and I believe he has the potential to be the starting C in Toronto next year.

1B Willis Hicks
Age: 25 Height: 6'0" Weight: 158 lbs
Bats: L Throws: L
Ratings: 9/3/8/5/4 Rating @ 1B: 5 Arm: 4
Drafted: 2nd Round 33rd overall by Oakland in 2000. Traded to Toronto in 2005 by The Chicago Cubs.

2006 Stats: .299 14 HR 45 RBI
Contract: $455,000 /1 year
GM Comment: An average first baseman. I wouldn't expect great things out of him. He makes a good solid backup but only plays an average defensive 1B and doesn't play any other positions.

1B Mauro Lopez
Age: 29 Height: 6'0" Weight: 217 lbs
Bats: L Throws: L
Ratings: 6/6/10/8/3 Rating @ 1B: 6 Arm: 2
Drafted: 3rd Round 69th Overall in 2000 Inagural Draft by Toronto.

2006 Stats: .246 36 HR 93 RBI
Contract: $17,800,000 /3 years
GM Comment: A big swinging power hitter. He won't walk much and strikesout a ton, but he puts up good offensive numbers. He makes a lot of money and could be potential trade bait this offseason.

2B Ryan Turvill
Age: 25 Height: 5'9" Weight: 200 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 10/10/4/10/10 Rating @ 2B: 8 Arm: 5
Drafted: 2nd Round 51st Overall in 2000 by Baltimore. Traded to Toronto by Baltimore in 2006.

2006 Stats: .254 8 HR 28 RBI
Contract: $6,469,200*Arbitration Eligible
GM Comment: Possible my best hitter for average. He has the potential to hit .320 and with his speed steal 40-50 bases. He will likely be my leadoff man next season.

2B Sancho Perez
Age: 36 Height: 6'2" Weight: 215 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 6/8/1/10/8 Rating @ 2B: 9 Arm: 4
Drafted: 20th round 574th Overall in 2000 Inagural Draft by Seattle. Signed as a free agent by toronto in 2005.

2006 Stats: .200 0 HR 4 RBI
Contract: $440,000 /1 year
GM Comment: He really doesn't have much upside. He doesn't hit for much of an average and has absolutely no power. His only strength is that he can play all 4 infield positions very well and can run fairly well. He is 36 and not likely to be with the team much longer.

SS Santiago Mendez
Age: 37 Height: 5'10" Weight: 209 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 7/9/6/9/5 Rating @ SS: 5 Arm: 8
Drafted: 22nd Round 645th Overall by Cleveland in the 2000 inagural Draft. Traded from the Indians to the Jays in 2000.

2006 Stats: .195 3 HR 15 RBI
Contract: $410,000 /1 year
GM Comment: He is useless. In his 6 years with the Jays he has never hit higher than .213. He will likely be released or assigned to AAA Syracuse

SS Roberto Diaz
Age: 28 Height: 6'0" Weight: 210 lbs
Bats: L Throws: R
Ratings: 7/10/3/7/10 Rating @ SS: 9 Arm: 7
Drafted: 5th Round Pick 143rd Overall in the 2000 First year player draft by Seattle. Traded to Toronto by Detroit in 2005.

2006 Stats: .232 6 HR 36 RBI
Contract: $350,000 Auto Renew
GM Comment: He is an average at shot at best, but with my lack of depth he will most likely be the starting SS next season.

LF Xavier 'Gabby' Contes
Age: 24 Height: 6'1" Weight: 160 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 10/8/9/8/10 Rating @ LF: 8 Arm: 7
Drafted: 1st Round 2nd Overall in 2001 by Oakland. Traded to Toronto by Oaklad in 2003.

2006 Stats: .297 31 HR 98 RBI
Contract: $10,460,000 /2 years
GM Comment: Along with 1B Mauro Lopez they provide the bulk of the power for the Jays lineup. He does it all hits for average and power and can steal a few bases here and there. He has already drawn some trade interest but I am not sure if I want to move him.

CF Sung-ho Ch'oe
Age: 25 Height: 6'1" Weight: 200 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 8/7/2/6/10 Rating @ CF: 10 Arm: 8
Drafted: 5th Round 131st Overall in 2000 1st year player draft by Atlanta. Signed by Toronto as a Free Agent in 2006.

2006 Stats: .266 3 HR 14 RBI
Contract: $455,000 /1 year
GM Comment: An excellent defensive outfielder with a great arm. He can play all 3 outfield spots very well and has a cannon for an arm. He won't hit much but makes a servicable 4th outfielder and defensive replacement.

CF Matt Harrell
Age: 28 Height: 6'0" Weight: 181 lbs
Bats: R Throws: R
Ratings: 9/9/9/6/5 Rating @ CF: 10 Arm: 10
Drafted: 1st Round 3rd Overall in 2000 First Year Player Draft by Oakland. Traded to Toronto by Detroit in 2005.

2006 Stats: .293 4 HR 34 RBI
Contract: $468,000 /1 year
GM Comment: He has the potential to be a superstar hitting for a good average and power bur just can't seem to put it all together. At 28 years old he may be done developing but he is a good backup/defensive replacement and is very cheap.

CF Aquilino Diaz
Age: 29 Height: 6'0" Weight: 168 lbs
Bats: R Throws: L
Ratings: 9/7/5/10/10 Rating @ CF: 8 Arm: 7
Drafted: 2nd Round 54th Overall in 200 Inagural Draft by Boston. Signed as a Free Agent with Toronto in 2005.

2006 Stats: .257 10 HR 54 RBI
Contract: $16,070,000 /3 years
GM Comment: I don't know what the previous GM was thinking with this contract. He has been nothing more than average his entire career. My plan is to trade him for anything I can get. I can think of 100 ways I would rather spend $16 million over the next 3 years.

RF Reynaldo Vasquez
Age: 35 Height: 6'0" Weight: 207 lbs
Bats: L Throws: L
Ratings: 5/7/10/9/3 Rating @ LF: 10 Arm: 9
Drafted: 7th Round 189th Overall in 2000 Inagural Draft by Toronto.

2006 Stats: .224 13 HR 35 RBI
Contract: $11,300,000 /3 year
GM Comment: He was a good player but his contact skills have dropped dramatically. He just can't catchup with the fastball anymore and it is starting to show in his stats. He is also making $11 million and is signed for 3 more years. He will be the 1st player on the trading block

GM Comments:

Well the lineup is not that great. There is a lot of money tied up in a few players with potentials that are declining very fast. I think I am going to be pretty much blowing this thing up and building the team the way that I want.

This one is going to be much more of a challenge because I don't have the talented players to start with that I did in the other Dynasty. I don't forsee a championship in Toronto anytime soon.

Thanks for Reading

The Jays farm system currently ranks 17th in the entire league with only 3 players ranked in the top 100 and in my opinion that is unacceptable. After examining the roster there are only a couple of players who have actually been drafted by the Blue Jays. They have had some pretty high picks in the last few years and it seems that very few of them have panned out. The Blue Jays minor league system is also virtually devoid of pitching talent. This is just another thing to add to my growing to do list.

Blue Jays Fire Entire Scouting Staff

December 1st, 2007

The Toronto Blue Jays announced today that they have fired their entire scouting staff. GM Ryan Stewart "The old scouting staff just was not succeeding. The fact that the Blue Jays have only a couple of home grown talents on thier roster and the 17th best minor league system in the League Attest to that. Blue Jays and Devil Rays Agree to Trade

January 8th, 2007

The Toronto Blue Jays and GM Ryan Stewart did not waste any time in pulling the trigger on a trade. The Blue Jays traded CL Kyeong-eon Kim to the Devil Rays for LF Vince 'Snake Hips' Barker, RF Phil Kessler and SS Freddy Sims.

GM Ryan Stewart on the trade "CL Kyeong-eon Kim is good closer and a great leader int he club house but he doesn't really fit into our long term plans. We are in a rebuilding period right now and we thought we could maximize the value of what we got in return for him if we trade him now. We get back a bit of a project player in LF Vince Barker who at 27 was still in Single A but I think he has the skills to be a very good player and just needed a change of scenery. The other two are prospects that we think could help the organization down the road"

To Tampa Bay:

CL Kyeong-eon Kim: 8-3 37 SV 2.51 ERA (With Toronto)

To Toronto:

LF Vince 'Snake Hips' Barker
27 Years Old.
Drafted: 1st Round 11th Overall in 2002 By Atlanta
2006 Stats: .260 12 HR 49 RBI (With Visalia Oaks, CAL A)

RF Phil Kessler
22 Years Old.
Drafted: 6th Round 155th Overall in 2004 By Tampa Bay
2006 Stats: .336 4 HR 25 RBI (With Visalia Oaks, CAL A)

SS Freddy Sims
20 Years Old.
Drafted: 8th Round 233rd Overall in 2006 By Tampa Bay
2006 Stats: .180 1 HR 12 RBI (With Princeton Devil Rays, Rookie League)

Jays Trade Minor Leaguer to Arizona for Pair of Catchers

January 10th, 2007

GM Ryan Stewart announced today that the Toronto Blue Jays have traded minor league 1B Paul Ingram to the Arizona Diamondbacks for minor league catchers Johnny Miller and Cesar Torres.

GM Ryan Stewart on the Trade "1B Paul Ingram was a waiver pickup by the Jays in 2006 from Texas and spent the entire 2006 season in AAA Syracuse where he hit .236 with 2 HR and 19 RBIs. He is a former 1st round pick of the Cleveland Indians 20th overall in 2000. He just hasn't been able to produce on the field. I was contacted by Arizona GM Terry Wallace about his availibility and we came up with this deal. I think it benefits both sides"

To Toronto:

C Johnny Miller
24 Years Old.
Drafted: 2nd Round 51st Overall in 2005 By Arizona
2006 Stats: .268 7 HR 34 RBI (With AA Tennessee)

C Cesar Torres
20 Years Old.
Drafted: 1st Round 18th Overall in 2006 By Arizona
2006 Stats: .283 1 HR 16 RBI (With Rookie League Missoula)

The addition of C Johnny Miller puts the futre of current Jays C Tom Johnson in jepordy. Johnson has become ingreasingly upset with the amount of playing time he has been receiving and sees himself as a starter not a platoon player. C Johnny Miller is a much better defensive catcher, also hots from the right side and looks like he could make a good right handed bat to complement the lefthanded C Robert Francis. GM Ryan Stewart on the possibility of trading C Tom Johnson "Anything is possible right now. I don't think that anyone is untouchable. We aren't actively shopping him at the moment but we will definately listen to offers for him"

Jays Catcher Johnson Traded to Cleveland

February 24th, 2007

GM Ryan Stewart announced today that C Tom Johnson and minor league 3B Shawn Sturdy were traded to Cleveland for minor league CL John McDonald and minor league SP Craig Banks.

GM Ryan Stewart on the transaction "With C Johnny Miller coming over from Arizona and the loss of CL Kyeong-eon Kim in a trade to the Devil Rays we were in a position where we needed to add some bullpen help. CL John McDonald is exactally the player we were looking for. He is a big hard throwing righthander who can top 100 mph with his fastball. He is young but I think he is ready to make the lead to the major league"

To Toronto:

CL John McDonald
21 Years Old.
Drafted: 20th Round 597th Overall in 2005 By Cleveland
2006 Stats: 2-6 14 SV 6.53 ERA (With AA Akron)

SP Craig Banks
21 Years Old.
Drafted: 2nd Round 57th Overall in 2005 By Cleveland
2006 Stats: 2-9 6.53 ERA (With S A Mahoning Valley)

To Cleveland:

C Tom Johnson

28 Years Old.
Drafted: 5th Round 150th Overall in 2001 By Los Angeles Angels
2006 Stats: .238 3 HR 19 RBI (With Toronto)

3B Shawn Strudy
23 Years Old.
Drafted: 1st Round 22nd Overall in 2003 By Toronto
2006 Stats: .228 12 HR 57 RBI (With AA New Hampshire)

Blue Jays Open Up Spring Training

March 1st, 2007

The Toronto Blue Jays and new GM Ryan Stewart descended on Dunedin Florida the sight of the Blue Jays Spring Training Facilities today as the preperations for the 2007 Season officially get underway.

GM Ryan Stewart was there earily as were a number of new faces trying to make a good impression on the new GM. The Jays made a number of moves in the offseason and will have a few new faces in the lineup come Opening Day in April. GM Ryan Stewart on the offseason transactions "We wern't able to do everything I want to, for instance I couldn't get a #4 or 5 starter that wouldn't cost us too much in a trade or a draft pick but I am happy with the changes otherwise"

New faces this season include C Johnny Miller, LF Vince Barker and CL John McDonald. All 3 will have a legitimate shot at making the opening day roster and joining the team when they head north to Toronto at the end of March.

Blue Jays Shutout on Opening Day By Detroit

April 3rd, 2007

The Toronto Blue Jays were shutout 3-0 today in front of a capacity crowd at Rogers Center as the Jays opened up the 2007 Regular Season.
The Game was started by SP Tony Chavez for Toronto and Detroit countered with SP Ed Williams. The Tigers would get to Chavez in the top of the 1st inning when with 2 on and 2 out Tigers RF Tom Robertson hammered a 2-2 fastball 450 feet into the centerfield seats to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead. That would be all of the offence in the game as both pitchers would not allow another run. SP Tony Chavez would last 7 innings giving up 5 hits and 3 ER with 2 BB and 7 K in taking hte loss. Tigers SP Ed White went 7.1 innings allowing just 4 hits 0 earned runs with 2 BB and 3 K for the victory.

Blue Jays Have Worst Record in Baseball

June 1st, 2007

The Toronto Blue Jays currently have the worst record in baseball and sit 14.5 games back of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for 1st Place in the American League East. The Jays record is 17-35. GM Ryan Stewart attributes to poor record to injuries "We have had a number of significant injuries this year. Our #3 Starter SP Jorge Tamayo has a strained back and will miss 6-8 weeks, LF Xavier Coates has missed 2 weeks with a sore knee and C Roberto Francis missed a month with a back injury. Wh had to call up 26 year old SP Adam Barber from AAA Syracuse to fill in for SP Jorge Tamayo. Barber is 7-2 with a 3.71 ERA this year in AAA. If we could get the whole lineup healthy we should be able to compete better than this"

With the Jays struggling so badly the possibility of moving some of the veterans on the team for prospects at the deadline has come up in the media. GM Ryan Stewart on the possibility "We don't really know yet. We don't want to throw in the towel just yet. If we can get healthy we might be able to go on a run and get back in the playoff picture. We will always listen to offers for players but nothing is definative yet"

First Year Player Draft Today: Jays Have 18th Overall Pick

June 1st, 2013.

The 2007 First Year Player Draft was held today and the Toronto Blue Jays and GM Ryan Stewart held the 18th overall selection. GM Ryan Stewart outlined his draft strategy "Right now our minor league system is pretty thin, we don't have a lot of impact prospects that are ready to break into the majors. We are looking to take the best availiable player in each round regardless of whetehr or not they come from a College or Highschool program. All we really want to do is return some respectability to the Blue Jays Farm System"

Toronto Blue Jays 1st-3rd Round Picks

SP David 'Vampire' Moody (1st Round)
22 Years Old, 6'2", 230 lbs Bats: S Throws: R
Texas Tech University - College (NCAA)
Potential Ratings: 10/7/10 Fastball: 101+ MPH
Comment: A flamethrowing righthander who relies on his 100 MPH fastball to blow guys away. He has great stuff and command but his pitches don't have a lot of movement. Like most power pitcher he needs to work on his control in the minors. He has the ratings and makeup to move quickly through the Jays Minor League System. He went 3-4 with a 2.26 ERA in 2007 for the Red Raiders.
Estimated Arrival in the Majors: As early as September 2008. He looks like he could be a future Ace of the Jays staff. He throws hard and has great control. He just needs to learn how to harness it in the minor leagues. He will likely start his professional career in Rookie League Pulaski but could see Single A Lansing by the end of the year.

1B Dave Barber (2nd Round)
22 Years Old, 6'1", 210 lbs Bats: L Throws: L
Tulane University - College (NCAA)
Potential Ratings: 8/10/10/9/5 Rating @ 1B: 5 Arm: 2
Comment: He has a very high potential but he may not ever come close to it. His potential ratings suggest that he could hit 30-40 HR in the major leagues but he really needs to work on his eye at the plate (he struckout 3.8 times for every walk in 2007). He only an average defensive 1B and has a poor arm so a move to the outfield is unlikely. He is probably destined to be a DH and could do a very good job of it if he pans out. He hit .379 with 9 HR and 25 RBIs last year.
Estimated Arrival in the Majors: 2009-2010. I think he may need a few years to develop and could have a tough transition from College baseball to the professional ranks. he will start in Rookie League Pulaski and could spend a season or two there before moving up.

3B Russell Matthews (3rd Round)
19 Years Old, 6'0", 200 lbs Bats: R Throws: R
Orlando Highschool, Florida - Highschool (USHS)

Potential Ratings: 10/10/7/6/8 Rating @ 3B: 4 Arm: 10
Comment: Thiskid has a ton of potential and I was supresed to see him still availiable in the 3rd round (I considered taking him with my 2nd round pick). He is only average defensively but has a rocket for an arm and can really swing the bat. He hit .437 with 9 HR and 29 RBIs in 2007. the only knock against him is the fact that he only has a 3 in workrate and is not known as the hardest worker.

Estimated Arrival in the Majors: 2012-2013. I don't expect to see him in the Majors for quite a while. he has very low current ratings compared to his potential and I think he will need a few years in Rookie league before he moves up to more competition. He has the potential to be an allstar so I will be watching him closely.

Toronto Draft Summary:

Total # of Picks:
20
Total # of Pitchers Selected: 10 (6 SP, 3 CL, 1 MR)
Total # of Position Players Selected: 10 (1 3B, 3 2B, 3 OF,1 C, 1 SS, 1 1B)
Total # of College Players Selected: 14 (5 SP, 3 OF, 2 CL, 1 MR, 2 2B, 1 1B)
Total # Of Highschool Players Selected: 6 (1 CL, 1 3B, 1 SS, 1 2B, 1 C, 1 SS, 1 SP)
