Draft pool SS with a high pitching potential?

In my league's draft pool there is a SS that has position ratings for SS and CF, and has contact potential of 7, HR potential of 4, and eye potantial of 8...meanwhile he has Stuff, Movement and Control ratings of 9,9, and 8. His listed position is as SS. My question is: Is he a legitimate pitching prospect? Should I draft him to groom him to be a starter? (The actual ratings are turned off in this league, we can only go by potential and current stats.)

Thanks.

I say do it, and if he doesn't perform well after a year or two, switch him back to SS. He should still get some AB's as a pitcher if he has enough endurance to start.

He probably won't get any ABs if your minors are set up to have the DH, unless you put him in the lineup as a SS (and why not!?). I've never seen an OOTP fictional league generate a batter with decent pitching potential- I actually posted a thread a while back about converting batters to pitchers, and all batters had miserable pitching potential at first:

Are scouts on, or are these his actual ratings?

Has anyone found away to put a player in the rotation and in the lineup at the sametime. I've tried it and I can't get it to work right. The game will let you do it, but if the player's position is listed as anything offensive then he pitches like everyday. I think this happens because the game see's SS and says "hey, this guys a SS and he's starting so he should play all the time". On the other hand if you set his position to pitcher and put him in the lineup at SS then he only plays like every 5th day. What I want is to have him pitch in the rotation and play offense on the days he doesn't pitch. It would be really cool if while in-game the AI would maybe pull him from SS to Relief pitcher and then back to SS, or he could start the game and then go to SS or DH or something like that. If anyone has gotten this to work I'd be interested in how you did it.

I guess the game uses the player's primary position to determine usage, and not the lineup slot, like it should be. A SS in a pitcher's slot should be treated as a pitcher, when it comes to rest days.

This sounds like a bug to me. What about making a note of this in tech support so that it gets logged?

These are his actual ratings. I have the third overall pick in the draft, and this guy looks like he can be the next Pedro Martinez wuth his stuff, movement and control.... but he is listed at SS.... does this mean I will be "converting" him into a SP? I am looking for a top of the line SP, and he seems to have the potential for it, but I am worried that he is a long shot because of his SS rating.

no, you are not converting him. Simply switch his primary position to SP and plug him in your rotation and at short so he plays the field when he is not pitching (in the minors). If you leave his primary position as pitcher, he will pitch normally and play the field when he is not the starting pitcher. The only downside is that as long as his primary position is pitcher, his batting ratings will not develop. Conversely, if you leave his position as SS, his pitching ratings will not develop.

I would draft him and assign his positon to be starting pitcher assuming his endurance rating is high enough.

I will... in fact, I will update on this thread as he develops (or regresses...though hopefully not that!)

I've never been able to get this to work. If you read my previous post you'll see what I'm talking about. The playing time isn't right if the player is assigned to the lineup and the rotation (in the minors).

I see your point. My biggest concern was will he develop as a starter if his initial position is a SS. I will groom him as a SP alone, as his potential as a SP is wicked good, and I don't need a SS.... but I definitely could use a Johann Santana in my rotation.

This guy could make it to the bigs.

Then fall apart.

And come back as a hitter in a fairy tail story.

And then get busted for maybe using illegal HGH.

But, but, but, that would be soooooo unrealistic!

I've never had a problem doing this. Make sure you change his position to pitcher. Your post indicated you left them as a position player, that would definitely screw things up since the game won't recognize the player's endurance rating if his position is set to a non-pitcher position.

Sorry I am not seeing the same thing you are.

edit: I just tested this using a player listed as a starting pitcher. In a 72 game season, he started 16 games as a pitcher and 51 at 3B. Worked perfectly.
