Position Label

Does it have any bearing on a players performance, ratings, or usage by the computer when AI manages lineups and in-game substitutions/pinch hitters, etc?

If I have a player that is listed as a 3B, but has ratings such as:

Fielding rating 3B 2
Fielding rating SS 6
Fielding rating 1B 8

and I change his position (label) to 1B, how will that affect AI and player development? anyone know?

It may make a difference for your depth charts keeping him as a 3B. When I see these types of players (those rated better at a secondary position) I usually change their main position to the one that has the higher ratings. If the player above is a great hitter with power I probably would have moved him to SS. 1B are a dime a dozen in OOTP while a great hitting shortstop only comes around every so often......at least it appears that way when I can't find a SS.

I don't think it has any great significance. However:

-you will notice the player's overall and potential star rating may change if you change his position. Star ratings (or the /80 rating, if you use that scale) are based on comparisons with players at the same position, so if you change a SS into a 1B, his star rating will usually drop because the offensive quality of 1Bs is much better than of SSs. There is a Game Setup preference that you can change if you want players to be compared regardless of position;

-if you change someone to a random position that they've never played, the AI will insert the player in depth charts as a backup at that position. So, if you make your backup LF into a catcher, he'll likely be inserted as a backup (never a starter) at catcher and at LF. If he's good enough to start in LF, the AI will use him there no matter how you set his position (unless you convert him to a pitcher, I think).

Unfortunately there is no way to force the AI to use a player at a certain position- no matter how you set a player's position, the AI will look at the player's underlying fielding ratings to determine where best to play him. The ability to lock a player into a position has been requested for next year's version of the game.

so the way I read your replies, the label is basically meaningless unless I change it to pitcher (perhaps). it is really only used then for me to look at when i am evalutating my lineups. i do know that if i use the dropdown for shortstops, anyone rated at ss will show up, which I really like about the game
