Service Time/Salary Cap

Hey everyone,

I set up my first "serious" fictional league to play solo. 16 teams with a 120 game schedule, so I adjusted the service time for 1 year from 172 to 130. However, when I go to the player's contract screen it will say things like 5 years and 411 days.

Is this going to be a problem with guys not being able to become FA's despite the acquired service time, or is it just a silly numbers thing that is annoying but doesn't affect anything?

Second, I set the salary cap at 90 million. After the draft only 1 team was over the cap, 2 were close, a few teams in the 70 million range and some in the 45-60 range. I have simmed up to ST and the team over the cap is still over the cap. Will they get under it before opening day? And do you think 90 million is too high for a 16 team league?

Thanks to all who answer. I greatly appreciate it!

That's weird. You might want to post that over in the Tech Support forum as a possible bug. Even if it is just a silly numbers thing, it really shouldn't say "411 days". :P

No. The way OOTP enforces a salary cap in that situation is simply that the team won't be able to offer any additional contracts until they get their payroll under the cap. It's a result of the fact that player contracts aren't assigned until after the inaugural draft - since you don't know you're going to be over the cap until after the draft is completely done, it's a little unfair to expect teams to cut players right away. It's an imperfect system in my view, but for the time being, at least, it is what it is.

The size of the league really has very little to do with what an appropriate salary cap is. Much more important are the revenue settings and the typical player salaries that you specified. I have a twenty-team league with a $5 million salary cap - but then, our minimum player salary is about $28K and the typical Superstar salary is $1 million.

$90 million is probably a decent number if you left the rest of the financial settings at their defaults, though.

There is a serious possibility I'm misremembering here, but I think I've seen this once before, and you need to sim forward one day for the '411 days' to get converted back to the correct number of years. I'm curious now anyway, so I hope you can post back and let me know if simming ahead a day does the trick.

Yes, simming ahead fixed the problem. I simmed the entire season to make sure there wouldn't be any issues, and there wasn't.

Thanks guys!
