Getting Ready for 2008 Rosters -- NEED YOUR HELP! Join the 2008 Roster Team!

Hey guys,

Back on the ol' train once again, and getting in the mood to get things going here for 2008. As has been hammered over and over in the past, we need to have a total team effort here, and I'm certainly willing to spearhead that if nothing else. I think another thing that needs to be done is getting things done BEFORE things like the Lahman database, BA Top 10, etc. are released around January-February.

I'm willing to do my part in getting a database out there with 2007 stats BEFORE that Lahman drops in late January. I think with Excel comma-delimited files it should be a lot easier (although still tough) than I thought it was going to be. I'm willing to do this and help put the main parts of the set together.

However, I think we need to really get cracking on minor league stats this year so we can have them in the release next year. This is one area where you guys can REALLY help me. What I've done for my "test" team is go through, edit all the vitals, and then copy the players stats in from www.sports-wired.com (has career minor league stats) into a regular notepad document. This will save the tabs that separate the different stat fields and make it so that I can import it into Excel and manipulate the data to import into OOTP. Putting the player ID # on here is essential too because without it, I can't really import the stats. I put an example of how I did this at the bottom.

I would love to get people cracking on the minor league rosters and stats while I'm putting this 2007 stats database together. If anyone else would like to help me with the stats database for the ML rosters, I'm sure we could find a way to segment this as well.

What I'm thinking is that I can put together a "template" for us to work with, that I can send all of you guys to work off of, and we can get this baby going as soon as October 1 hits. If we get THAT going, I really think that we can put out a great roster set for 2008.

All of this is assuming of course that there won't be any problems importing a 2007 league into 2008, of which I guess I'll have to ask Markus first. But I think we can get a LOT of the work done in 2007, and then even guys who don't get on the Beta team can continue to work with text documents, etc. for importing (and we can make a push to get as many people on beta as possible I'm sure).

So if you're SERIOUS about putting in some hard work on this project, please let me know in here. I'd really like to get this off the ground and get serious about actually having a REAL and ridiculously in depth roster set out there for 2008. And at the same time, I'd like to let you guys get an inside look at the whole process by helping, so that we always know exactly where we stand on progress and no one in the community is in the dark about a release timeframe.

I assure you that this isn't any work (for now) that you have to know a ton about the sport to do. This will be for now, just editing player info and not ratings or anything that is subject to a certain person's opinion (so you can't mess it up! ) We can handle ratings WAY down the line, but getting this framework started is essential.

Sorry for the long-winded post.

Here's an example of how I'm putting the stats into a notepad document. If we put things in like this, I can import it into Excel, swap some columns around, insert a few lines of info for each player, and then import them so that we can have full minor league (and independent/foreign) stats.

EXAMPLE:

Cubby, do you think a private chat room might be of use in this project? People can get together in real time to go over things of interest.Multiple discussions can be going on in private rooms with no interuptions.

Drop in and look it over at soxxcountry.com duffys tavern link

Sign me up. While I likely can't put hundreds of hours in for a project like this, I can find time for 5-10 hours a week to help out. I'd be interested in hunting down stats on the web mostly.

Bump -- trying to get hold of battists and Markus about importing into OOTP9 now, the more help though that I can get recruited the better, I think we have a team of about five right now to start working on these minor league stats.

I'm planning on getting things organized this weekend and getting you guys out something Monday that you can start looking at.

I've posted (almost) complete 2005-2007 stats, with an ID system, at http://econweb.tamu.edu/turocy/minors

I've got stats coded to an ID system back to 1994, though it'll take a little more work to integrate them -- PM me and I can hook you up.

Hi guys,

I spoke with Garrett (cubby) about rosters for 2008. We're going to be taking a different approach for the next version of the game, and I've invited Garrett into that fold.

If you're also interested in participating, please send in an application for the beta team, and be sure to check off the checkbox for "rosters"!

Thanks,

Steve

Any chance we get a 2007/2008 offseason roster set before for OOTP 2007?

Yep, finishing up the touches on it before we start on the next project.

It's not going to be as detailed as past versions (obviously) but I don't think that's a totally bad thing. I'm hoping someone picks up with it where I leave off and runs with it while the community waits on OOTP9 over the winter.

I've already imported all of the players and stats from 2007, and I'm going through now and putting them on correct teams, etc. I'm up to Philadelphia alphabetically, and after that I'll put in real salaries and MLB coaches and release the first version.

I'm only planning on using mostly fake players for the minors (although I'll probably do the top ten-thirty prospects for each team and the guys with service time from 2007 are obviously going to be sprinkled throughout the minors as they aren't all MLB ready... see Kevin Cash )

Awesome! I can't wait. I'm sure I'll completely redo the Giants minor league system so it has all the players in it.

Thanks for constantly putting out great stuff!

Hmm, true. I'm not sure how combining files would go about working though, I'm a bit gun shy after the last debacle with crashes, etc.

I might release this version, then combine them and release that and we can give it a try.

I would definately be willing to help for a 2008 edition. I would like to help with the coaches. I will be willing to research for all the various leagues around, and input their stats and managerial tendencies if I can find reports on them. Also included would be biographical information, and if I can find photos. Not sure what all the new version of rosters for the next version of OOTP will have, so any input on that would be helpful. I did apply to beta test the game, so hopefully, I will be asked onboard. I helped in beta testing OOTP 3, and also at that time had released a roster set. Years ago, though. Anyhow, let me know.

Thanks,
Jay

In the 2008 roster set that I'm building in '07 before we get to work on beta, I've just finished re-rating MLB players, have salaries to do and the first release should be out.

ML rosters + salaries are done for all but 5 teams, so I'm thinking this should be out in the next few days.

I'll at first release a very bare bones set with 2006/2007 players who played at least one game in MLB+ fictional minors, and then see if I can combine the minors from my 2007 MLB set into this one for the next release.
