The Islanders pay Alexei Yashin $17.6 million not to play for them

Yeah.

From the ESPN article:

Quote:
"From my time knowing Alexei as a teammate and as a general manager, I have learned that Alexei is nothing but a first-class individual," said Snow, who played with Yashin for four seasons before becoming the Islanders' GM. "With him on the team, the Islanders made the playoffs four out of the last five seasons and I believe that we would not have been able to do that without him."
"...and that's exactly why we'd rather spend $2.2 million of cap room for nothing for 8 years rather than keep him."

The interesting question is what Yashin now thinks he's worth, and whether there's a NHL GM crazy enough to offer that to him.

What does yashin think he's worth? Too damn much.

Is there someone crazy enough to sign him? Of course there is.

At least there was one piece of good news I got yesterday. Looks good on the bum.

Sounds like the Islanders got the best of this particular deal.

I thikn more that Wang finally clued in (much too late mind you) that this guy was a bum. They actually got screwed hard. They lost a star defensemen (Chara), a very good centre (Spezza), and got soaked for roughly sixty mil or so. Sounds like a screw-job to me.

I was thinking more of the paying Yashin 17.6 million not to play. Him not playing should be worth at least $20 million plus, and thus, a virtual steal for the Islanders.

There is that angle for sure, but I prefer to thikn of it more as writing off a bad debt.

By this time next year I wouldn't be surprised to see him having to find a job in Russia (which he probably wouldn't mind) barring a team being really deperate for a centre.

The Rangers pay Alex Rodriguez $7 million a year to play for the Yankees. The Rangers are 21-38. I'll trade you our owner and management team for a used condom.

There probably aren't that many teams in the Russian league that Yashin would play for. St. Petersburg or Moscow might be fine, but half of the teams are from places like Magnitogorsk, Khabarovsk, Novokuzhnesk, or Novosibirsk. You get depressed just by locating them on a map.
