Moyer and sons tackle the MLB
This is my first attempt at a dynasty report, probably because OOTP2007 is the first time I've found historical play truly compelling. I dunno if I'll finish it, altho I certainly plan on playing it through to 2006. I also have no idea if the writing will be decent or not. I plan on doing it from the perspective of a fictional version of myself born 100 years earlier and fictional children (never had a son, so). I'm playing out of commish mode aside from HOF inductions, I'm not recalculating player totals, and I'm using peak seasons to come up with a player's potential. I think this is the way that makes the most sense to me, since I want players to develop in the engine rather than having a predictable career, and I think using peak values for potential ratings is a fair way of doing things since anything that might de-rail someone's career or keep them from achieving their potential can happen in the engine. If someone had a great rookie year in real life and then had their arm explode, I'd rather have the game import them as a good player and decide for itself whether their career ends up going somewhere.
Here we go.

The year is 1901. After years of amateur baseball of varying quality, several false starts by the National League and American Association, major league baseball has finally reached a point where it is worthy of the name "big leagues". The Western League burst on the scene in the late 19th century, bringing with it a clean style of play that contrasted sharply with the hooligan-ball that the National League was known for. Many of the top players in the country were drawn to this clean style of play, as well as a rapidly increasing fanbase. This, along with some sense of stability in the rules and strong financial backing, helped to bring the world's greatest baseball talent into a handful of large cities scattered through the northeast and midwestern United States. This is where the story begins.

![]() The More Things Change, the More They Stay the Same? Will Jason Moyer Make a Difference for Philadelphia? Newly appointed Philadelphia Athletics GM Jason Moyer put in an all-nighter yesterday, saying that he's got a lot of work to do and needs to get settled quickly. "I've done my homework. I've scouted this outfit. I want to be here," he said in a radio interview. "These jobs aren't easy to get. You've got to hit the ground running." Tomorrow at the Inaugural Draft it will be the first chance for the new skipper to show off his skills.

At the inaugural big league owners meeting, the commissioner draws the names of all 16 teams from a hat. Philadelphia Athletics GM Jason Moyer, disappointed with receiving the 14th pick in the draft, expects to successfully build his team regardless.
Just 24 years old, the former amateur second baseman is a self-made millionaire. While his baseball career was de-railed by alcohol-induced vertigo, he was able to use his prodigous management skills and keen opportunistic timing to build a vast empire of wealth. Certainly his portfolio has diversified in recent years (worthy of note is his role as the largest shareholder in the Standard Oil company), but to most Americans he's primarily known for his many fascinating (some would say superfluous) mechanical inventions. The first man to discover that the power of steam could be harnessed to drive a complex mechanical simulation of base ball, he was both chided for wasting the leisure time of the modern man and lauded for helping to popularize what had previously been regarded as a children's game.

Despite being young and inexperienced as a general manager, ownership expected him to produce a championship winning ballclub out of the gate. Both Jason and his manager Doug Davis tried to put things in perspective, explaining that a strong exhibition season didn't mean anything compared to the grind of a 140 game schedule. The board of directors didn't care. "You can win it all, or you can find a job somewhere else" they said. Both men knew that while they had fashioned a strong base ball club, it was impossible to predict the cards that fate would deal during the course of a full year. Little did they know just how cruel fate could be.
