Combo pictures and Facegen in historical league
Very basic question that I can't find an answer for:
I'm setting up a historical league starting in 2004. In the historical league creation wizard, which settings do I use so that I can use pictures for historical players and facegen for newly created ones? Thanks, |

Here's what I found when I looked at it. See if you agree:
The historical league creation wizard has player and coach pictures disabled by default. This is probably what you want, as you don't have to deal with hundreds of fictional photos that will look nothing like the real players. Then, the wizard asks for when it should create player pictures. I think this should be "Upon Player Creation" as FaceGen photos may be generated for real players if you leave this "On Demand" when you first look at their profiles, if you change the option above after game creation. Next, you want to save all of your real player photos in the saved league folder, using the Name Format ("John_Doe.jpg"). Section 31.0 of the manual has instructions on how to do this and where they go (there is even a section called "Using Custom Pictures Together With FaceGen"). The good news is, according to the manual, "Named player photos will always take precedence over fictional faces. So, if you have a John_Smith.jpg, that will always be used over any fictional face for that player." When you are done with all of that, then you may want to go back to Game Setup, Player & Picture Options, Fictional Player Options, Player Pictures for: All Players or Major League Players Only, depending on your choice. This will turn on the option below it to Update/Generate Player Pictures which you can use to give a FaceGen photo to all players without one, whether they are real or newly created fictional players. As stated above, your real photos saved with the Name Format will prevent FaceGen photos being generated for these real players. Or, you may prefer not to turn on Player Pictures for anybody who does not have a real photo. In that case, leave this option set to "No Fictional Pictures." Even with that off, the real photos that you loaded show up in the game. Note: These observations were made while working with the Lahman Database. P.S.: Thanks for helping me learn about this. It's interesting. I may be turning into an historical player myself.

I just want to confirm that 1998 Yankees observations are correct. The game does a good job of this, the only problem you'll have is, like he said, if you end up with a fictional player with a similar name, he'll get the picture.

It's hard to imagine this extremely complex game being successful, given the limited resources of a relatively small company like SI and despite the best efforts of volunteers, without forums like these in which needed information is exchanged by community members.
