Don't forget to Vote 756!

Public to decide fate of Bonds' record-breaking ball

The fate of Barry Bonds' record-breaking home run ball is now in the public's hands after its buyer announced Monday he was taking votes on whether to give the ball to the Hall of Fame, brand it with an asterisk or blast it into space.

I voted, that it should go to the HOF.

I think the ball (and even Bods himself) should go to Cooperstown until it is proven and decided officially that the record is not legitimate.
I know many people will have defferent opinions about this, but I think that's the way it should be.

Everybody (including me) can blame him or his ball as he/she wants once it is proven that the record is the dirty one, but til then, the ball should be treated nicely.

I voted for the first, but wouldn't mind seeing the second either. Not because I'm one of them asterisk advocates, mind you, but because it would be one of them cool footnotes that future generations would throw around during idle conversation, followed by a few grins and maybe a comment about how quaint us turn-of-the-millenium folks were.

I voted for "asterisk" and, I would assume, display at the HoF or someplace else. This, as a perpetual reminder of what can happen to a sport if its caretakers are neglectful.

I voted for the HOF, but I wouldn't mind the blastoff thing. One good thing about shooting it into deep space is that it would end conversation about what to do with it next.

I hope if they put an asterisk on it, that the Hall of Fame refuses to display it.

Maybe Microsoft can buy A-Rod's record breaker and brand it with their logo and then send it to the Hall.

The HOF will never display the ball defaced in this manner.

In that event, wouldn't it be awesome if the Bonds steroids allegations turned out to be BS.

I can see Bonds and MLB financing a satellite retrieval-type of operation in that case.

I agree, except I don't think the steroid issue should actually be an issue. Teams and players have cheated since pro baseball started. I think Bonds deserves the record whether he was juiced or not. All professional sports are a lot more tarnished than some realize, and I don't think it's an issue.

You don't actually have any doubts, do you? (Did you read the book?)

This is fun and all, and I give the guy credit for having fun with it, but isn't it sort of set up in Bonds' favor? Aren't the anti-Bonds votes going to be split between B (brand) and C (space)?

I voted for spacing it. Kind of like throwing the ball back out of the stands. Way, way out.

Doubts about the credibility of sensationalist journalism?

None here.

So you, at least, didn't read it. The book hardly carries a sensationalist tone. Really the only legitimate critique, I think, is that they use the term "cheater" periodically. Indeed, that is not necessary. But even so, the tone is sober and the sources are documented. The combined weight of material and circumstantial evidence is really overwhelming.

I think that's sad.

It would be nice if there were some rules or governing body that could prevent this sort of thing.

Even if Bonds might have cheated to reach that number the ball shouldn't be blasted into space. It should still be in the HOF because it was a part of baseball history whether it be positive or negative.

To know that the ball could be gone forever out in space is upsetting to me.

People want to say that no player should be bigger than the game. Well, if the ball is launched into space then we're basically saying that today's fans are bigger than history.

Great post.
I really must agree with you.

Book of Shadows? A completely unbiased, level accounting of events, without a doubt. No ax/grind dichotomy in display there.

Asterisk no hands down. Not only then does the ball get sent to the hall of fame, but it'll also piss off Barry too. Huzzah!

So Bonds called Marc Ecko, the winning bidder and a fashion designer, an idiot today. Typical

I didn't know he bought the ball. As a sidenote I wear his clothes all the time.

I would pick option one. It is a historical artifact, controversial yes, but still an artifact. We haven't done things like this to the supposed skull of Hitler, have we? Not to compare those two, but that's my point.

It bothers me that it could be blasted into spaace the most. The asterisk thing to me is just a grafitti thing that the public wants, which Ecko happens to be a big supporter of.

Option One for me
