Player Editor

Can someone please tell me what BABIP stands for in theOffensive ratings under player editor. I'm thinking it has something to do with the players eye, and has something to do with, walks, at bats and inning pitched in some combination.

Pretty sure it means Batting Average of Balls put Into Play.

Thanks,

If it was a guess, it was a darn good one. That's what it stands for. (Not 100% sure of all the prepositions, but the key words are right.)

From Baseball Prospectus

Quote:
BABIP
Batting Average on balls put into play. A pitcher's average on batted balls ending a plate appearance, excluding home runs. Based on the research of Voros McCracken and others, BABIP is mostly a function of a pitcher's defense and luck, rather than persistent skill. Thus, pitchers with abnormally high or low BABIPs are good bets to see their performances regress to the mean. A typical BABIP is about .290.

WWWWhat? That's great execpt it's under players hitting ratings under the edit player function, which makes it even more confusing.

It's batting average of balls in play... his ability to get a hit when he makes contact and sends the ball somewhere in fair territory, not counting home runs.

So if he strikes out it doesn't count against BABIP, and if he hits a home run it doesn't count against BABIP. But if he makes contact - without hitting home run, 10 times, and all 10 are hit to, and caught by, the left fielder... his BABIP is .000

That put together with another category (can't remember what) creates his "contact" rating.

It's what you learn after you know it all that counts.

I firmly believe that any man's finest hour... is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious. (Vince Lombardi)

I don't measure a man's success by how high he climbs but how high he bounces when he hits bottom. (George S. Patton)

Avoiding K's has a decent impact on it

And maybe power to a tiny extent?
