My PBRL Guys

Exactly what it says, with a little background thrown in along with progress reports.

#91 A.B.C. "Alphabet" Deaton, Catcher, 21 yrs, Detroit Tigers
Drafted in 1st round, 12th overall pick, by Detroit in 1916...
Had first career hit on 6/11/1916, off Gideon Harrow (CLE)...
Hit first career homerun on 8/9/1917, off Huck Kroeger (CHA)...
Won GOLD GLOVE AWARD at Catcher in 1917...

1916 backup got in 12 games hitting .211 in 19 ab,but 1917 was a different story playing in 103 games hitting only .226 but winning the Golden Glove. His glove and his arm will keep in the bigs for a few years

Alphabet has a rep of being a little free wheeling and some have questioned his choice of friends, some of whom reportedly have ties to Mafia related gambling interests. I am not predicting a long career for ABCD but he should be a good part timestarter and a defensive replacement.

Next to come: #16 Deacon "Holy Man" Deaton, Starting Pitcher, 23 yrs, Philadelphia (A)

#16 Deacon "Holy Man" Deaton, Starting Pitcher, 23 yrs, Philadelphia (A)

Drafted in 2nd round, 29th overall pick, by Philadelphia (A) in 1916...

The orphaned son of an Amish father and an Italian mom, Deacon was raised by an uncle (who has since been commited to a state mental institution in Louisiana). Needless to say Deaconlooked ofr and found solace in the Southern Baptist Church.

Deacon spent 1916 in A ball starting 17 games goin 8-4 with a 2.71 ERA. But a funny thing happened in 1917 and the Athletics obviously forgot about him as a future major leaguer as he was used as a reliever getting in only 15 games and a measly 18 IP. He had a sub 2.00 ERA and obviously has "pissed" off Philly management as he deserves at least a shot at AA if not AAA as a starter.

Philly management doesn't have the first clue how to run a baseball franchise. Look at how sorry they've been all these years.

And I can say that. I'm the management.

Fixed the pic, and now for:

#6 Clyde "Waterboy" Harrison, Shortstop, 22 yrs, Cincinnati Reds

Born in Bangor, Maine Clyde got his nickname and his strong throwing arm hauling buckets of water to the lumberjacks who worked for his dad's saw mill.

Drafted in 1st round, 15th overall pick, by Cincinnati in 1916 where he spent the year in AA hitting .316 with 25 steals. 1917 found him still at AA whre he slipped to .252 with 21 steals. 1918 could be a make or break year as at age 22 Clyde really needs to be in AAA if he wants a chance to be a major league regular.

Alphabet is still in the bigs as a part time player (28 games so far) but he's hitting a little better (.030 better than last year so far) and is throwing out 40%!!!! of the runners attempting to run on his cannon.

BUT>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

He dislocated his shoulder (right or left?) on 5/21 and isn't expected back to the end of July!!!!!

*********By the way it is my opinion that the "esteemed" commish did this on purpose juat because my Boston team in Batty is better than his Boston team ****************************

You wound me.

Though I did find it quite amusing that this happened the sim immediately after I threatened to give him a CEI

Your sense of humor is almost as lacking as your teams abilities.

As for the Deacon, he's in the PHI(A) minors in AA, got 12 starts with a good ERA of 2.83 though his record is only 2-8 (the team SUCKS). With sub 3.00 ERA's for the 3 yrs he's been STUCK in the minors, he deserves a shot at AAA RIGHT NOW and should get a taste when major league rosters expands especially since the organizations "major" league team is 13th in ERA, he could be the pitcher to put them over the top and beat the other AL chumps/pretenders.

You'll be happy to know he got called up to AAA in the latest export.

And I wouldn't jump to any conclusions about him being able to help the major league team. Pitchers suddenly lose all ability to not suck when they get to the bigs in Philly. Do you really want that to happen to him?

and the third of the trio is "The Water Boy" who's in AA for the 3rd year, he's rebounded after an off sophomore year, hitting over .300 so far and is closing on his career high of 25 SB in his rookie year with 21 ALREADY.

His big hurdle may be "Zippy" playing SS for Cincy.

August 1918

ABC Deaton: part time player and deservedly so, only good thing is that he's throwing out 40% of the runners trying to steal on his arm.

Deacon Deaton: Good sub 3 ERA in 12 games in AA (though only 2-8) but the jump to AAA is NOT looking good, 1-7, 7.49 ERA in 9 starts. Real simple, he's 2.5 times the batters he's struck out.

Clyde Harrison: 2 solid years (1916 .316 avg, 25 steals and this year hitting .289 just about all singles and already has 30 steals. At this point he looks like a solid minor leaguer but at age 22 he needs to pick it up a little.

5/23/1919

ABC Deaton: Now a Red Sox-er, still part time, hitting still stinks, but thrown out 5 of 11 runners so far.......

Deacon Deaton: Promoted to the A's AAA team he's gotten 3 starts and gone 2-1 with an ERA of 2.63 and even better he's only walked 6 in 24 IP!!!

Clyde Harrison: After 3 years in AA (2 good with a fair season in the middle) Clyde is getting another shot in AAA but he's only hitting .231 in 28 games so far and has struck out 3x as much as he's walked.

Well, it ain't pretty...

Some person who obviously knows diddly squat about baseball demoted Alphabet to the AAA team for the Red Sox. Well, maybe the guy ain't so dumb after all, Major lg avg=.203 AAA avg=.205......although 6 of his 17 hits so far in AAA are doubles....

Deacons gone 7-8 in 17 starts for the A's AAA team with a semi-decent 3.72 ERA with 4 CG and a shutout. The BAD part is he's walked 61 and only K'ed 48 in 121 IP.

and the final "ugliness" is the Waterboy, hitting a Mendoza-like .202 in 101 games in the Reds AAA.

Maybe I DON"T want the rest of em to be Red Sox, we suck enough!!!!!
