Nick Johnson Badly Hurt

Odd collision today's Nationals/Mets game. Wright hits a bloop to right. Austin Kearns comes in, Johnson goes out. They both slide for it and when they connect Johnson's whole body just stops. It doesn't LOOK like a bad collision, but Johnson didn't move for a long time and they carted him off, bracing his whole right leg with some heavy duty stuff. He was in very obvious agony when they carted him off.

Not going to give an amateur diagnosis, but I'd be absolutely stunned if this isn't severe.

I watched the collision a few times, and it really didn't look nearly as serious as it was. Broken femur... that's really bad.

they should check him for osteoporosis while he's at the hospital. he may be one of the 30 million Americans it affects.

Holy crap, he broke his femur?! That's... nearly impossible to do. I haven't seen the play, but I can't imagine anything on a baseball field breaking a femur. That's something usually reserved for trauma like a car accident.

You know, this really seems like the type of injury that could only happen to Nick Johnson. The guy can't catch a -- [no pun intended] -- break.

You're right. I wonder if Johnson has something, maybe osteoporosis like disposableheros suggested. I'm still amazed that he broke his freaking femur playing baseball.

It wasn't even an amazingly hard hit. It's very difficult to break that bone.

Didn't Robin Ventura break his femur sliding into home some years back? Or maybe it wasn't his femur. I don't remember now. It was way back, maybe eight or nine years ago.

Nope, I'm wrong. It was his ankle.

Ruben Mateo broke his femur in 2000 though. He did it in a collision with... the first base bag.

People always tell me it's bad to mock people when they're hurt and all that, but that is seriously hilarious.

What's the prognosis on if he'll ever play again? Depending on the type of break, broken femurs can be permanently crippling injuries.

My brother broke his in a motorcycle accident and has a titanium rod in his leg permanently now, along with a limp. If he was a professional athlete, the injury would have ended his career.

Here's the collision (under "More Coverage" on the right hand side):

Just doesn't look like it should have done what it did.

Supposedly the prognosis is very good, and they're saying he'll probably be okay in time for spring training. I think it was a fracture, not a total break. Still serious and painful, but not quite as bad.
