Oddly enough, people are talking about Morneau for MVP consideration. I think Santana and Mauer are both more deserving Twins candidates.

Mainly because he is finally hitting over .300 and is the first Twin since '87 with 30+ HR.

I think Mauer is more deserving, too. And I really can't fathom Jeter winning it. (Although with the sportswriters we have, it wouldn't surprise me)

dola,

In fact, one of the talking heads calling the NYY/DET game on ESPN said "Derek Jeter is the obvious choice for AL MVP."

Do the Tigers have a clear cut MVP of their team? I think with the way the whole team is playing, one of them at least deserves a nod here. I just don't know who I'd pick.

Agreed. They have been getting consistently solid performance from quite a few people. It would be hard to say that just one of the Tigers is a serious MVP candidate.

David Ortiz isn't even the most deserving Red Sock.

Jeter is hitting .307/.415/.482 from the shortstop spot. He's cooled lately but he was leading the league in VORP for some time. I don't think he deserves it, but he's hardly out of the running.

If the Astros make the playoffs, Lance Berkman. If it weren't for him, the Astros would be 10+ out.

.308/.415/.610
36 HR's (leads club by 16)
110 RBI (leads club by 59)

I would say that Jeter should be leading candidate.

AL VORP as of last night's games.

1. Hafner - 80.0
2. Jeter - 63.9
3. Ramirez - 62.8
4. Dye - 61.3
5. Ortiz - 61.0
6. Tejada - 59.9
7. Wells - 59.3
8. Sizemore - 56.3
9. Mauer - 55.1
10. Thome - 54.7

I dunno, is Jeter's defense really worth the difference between his bat and Hafner's?

Well, that is hard to say. According to BP it is worth 25 runs, but we don't really know enough about their metrics to trust them. I simply don't like the thought of a DH MVP (I'm an NL guy) so my vote would go to Jeter.

I just can't agree with that. To me, Hafner is far and away the AL winner.

It's not even September. How can we vote for awards with more than a sixth of the season remaining?
