How do you play defense in lacrosse?

There's a lacrosse game on ESPN2 and a second ago some guy ran right passed three or four defenders and tossed the ball into the goal. Since then, all they've done is try to intercept passes, which isn't going to help against a guy who just runs right to the net.

How the hell do you play defense in lacrosse?

With your feet - same as soccer.

And, when all else fails, smack 'em.

You hit the person with your stick. Seriously.

I kind of thought so. Are there any rules against that (i.e. no hits to the face)?

Yes - no hits to the face and you must be attempting to go for the other player's stick. (Though, that is subjective, and good defensive players use the stick to create distance.)

Bingo, big bodies with long sticks is the key to the defensive end. A clear is much more likely to happen by jarring the ball loose and changing the plane of play than from an interception though the long sticks can help in that department too. Now feel free to turn this into a discussion about the similarities between lacrosse defense and gay mating rituals.

Just make sure you have position.

I miss playing.

As a former long sticker, I've got to say, playing defense was the most fun part of the game.

I went to a Philadelphia Wings game and just couldn't get into it. This isn't knocking on any of you lacrosse guys, but I just couldn't get excited, especially when the refs didn't do anything about the fights.

I think Lacrosse would make a really fun 3-D EA sports type game, but a terrible text sim.

That is my contribution to the thread

dola,

I remember that there was a lacrosse game made for the Playstation called "Blast Lacrosse". It was a 5-on-5 sports title that was meant to be arcade-y, much like Blitz or Hitz. I never played it, but supposedly the game play was decent, but the game was just really ugly.

All hotlinking done from my own site.

They made an indoor lacrosse game a few years ago that blew pretty badly.

There just isn't enough of a market to get a big developer to spend the time on it. And thats cool, who wants to play video games when you can get out and play yourself (or if you are past that age, teach a kid the game).

I used to have season tickets to Boston Blazers Indoor Lacrosse. I really, really miss it.

I've never played lacrosse, but my high school was in one of the higher-income counties in Maryland (one of the biggest lacrosse states). The lacrosse players were what football/basketball players probably are in most cases in terms of social status and all that kind of stuff. Although I never played and don't know most of the details/rules, our school's games were always fun to watch (it helped that we kept winning the state championship). I've watched more than a few games on TV too when the NCAA tournament rolls around. The sport really is gaining in national popularity and rightfully so, IMO. I remember the Terps played the U of Denver in the first round of the tournament this year. I was pretty surprised that Denver had a team at all, but I guess that's just a testament to how the sport has grown so fast recently.

Naw. Check out the last comment on the video. The guy doesn't care that it was dirty...and everyone that does care obviously doesn't realize that it was a heck of a hit, therefore it is okay!
