UTBA-II Revised Scoring
A while back when the polls went up to modify the scoring, I sent Scot (SAL) a PM regarding a tweaking the scoring a bit for UTBA-II. After first being against the 3-point award for a decision victory, I thought about it and realized that it would actually be good for the league by removing the large discrepencies between the sluggers and boxers.
Below is my actual PM... BTW, has a definite decision been made yet about scoring? I wanted to check w/ you before I posted anything on the subject. I actually prefer the old scoring method, but do see how a majority of the guys want it changed to benefit slick fighters w/ 3 pts for a decision victory instead of 2. The excitment in boxing is generated by KO victories more than judges decisions in my opinion. What are your thoughts about a comprimise between the two camps. My suggestion will complicate scoring a bit, but it can be done.
__________________ Overall, as I stated above, I believe that the KO is an explosive and definitive crowd-pleasing ending to a fight and should therefore be rewarded as such. Giving a KO bonus of a .5 PT will not create the disparity in scoring that we all saw in UTBA-I. Unanimous Decisions are clear cut victories and along with TKO stoppages, should be rewarded with 3 PTS. Majority, Split and DQ victories are not as decisive and should only be worth 2 PTS. Draws (any type) remain worth 1 PT. I have run about a half-dozen sims with my new Tomato City roster against various other teams to test the scoring. Overall the total points have increased mainly due to the 3-PT Unanimous Decisions. The number of true KO victories ranged between 5 and 10 combined between the two teams with neither team with an overwhelming advantage. That works out between adding only 2.5 to 5 extra points to the totals combined. The total number of Unanimous Decisons ranged between 8 and 11 combined between both teams adding 8-11 points to the overall totals. Split/Majority decisons accounted for around 5-8 bouts. In all catagories of decisions, I did not see any drastic advantage to filling a roster with heavy punchers. (Even a feather-fisted guy gets a lucky KO once and a while and should be rewarded for it.) Unless he has changed his mind from our earlier conversations, Scot (SAL) said he agrees and supports this new points awarded distribution. I'm curious to know what others think of this idea... |

I like it a lot.
I do think KO's were rewarded too much in UTBA but I also do think a KO should be a small bonus over any scorecard decision. This seems to fit that bill perfect. |

I like it and I think it address all the issues others had with the old scoring system. Of course, what I really want to know is...

I only ran 1 sim between against the Muckboys and not surprisingly it ended in a tie 46.5 - 46.5
You'll be happy to hear that one match I ran against one of the other teams in our divison ended in a massive blowout: Tomato City 73, Team XXX 24 I won't say who it was, but some things haven't changed in the division... |

My opinion is that a win is a win, knockout or not. I think that a UD and a KO should be equal in points. I’m not sure what the point of rasing a UD win is when you raise a KO win as well.
Maybe I misunderstood (a very plausible scenario)

I don't think KO wins should be worth more than decision wins.

I also agree with this. I'm also not too keen on introducing half-points.

Because previous scoring had a KO win worth .50000 as much...the new system has it like .142 or something like that....very minimal advantage this way.

![]() I ran two test match ups against TC this morning: the Owls won one and TC won the other. Both times the score had the winner in the mid 50's and the loser in the low 40's on points (I don't have the results right in front of me, just going from memory). The only fighters to win both their bouts in both matchups were Frank Bruno and Mark Breland. Of course it means nothing until it's real...but it gives me a shred of hope. |
