A-Rod's game winning HR

I don't know how I feel about A-Rod tossing his helmet up in the air as he crosses home plate. Is he mocking David Ortiz or has Papi created a new phenomenon?

It was amusing to hear commentators talking about how ARod's RISP numbers are better than his normal numbers but that still means he's not contributing at clutch time.

That has always happened. I remember Francoeur doing it last year after his first career walk-off. So it's nothing new for guys to fire off their helmet before reaching the plate.

I'm sure the only thing crossing his mind when he won the game in the last AB was "how can I make fun of the Red Sox"

What's next? People taking their pants off when they hit homeruns?

Please tell me you weren't serious. Plenty of people did it before Ortiz and plenty of people will do it after.

And Ryan Zimmerman did the exact same thing for the Nats against the Yankees just last weekend.

I always kind of thought NY baseball fans were somewhat knowledgable (maybe a wrong assumption all along) but all this ARod hating in New York makes me questions those notions.

Dola,

Guys usually take off their helmet in game winning HR situations because when they get mobbed at the plate the helmet gets knocked around, especially down over the eyes/face, and the player can really see. Disorienting.

I read somewhere that Johnny Damon did it because all the guys pound the helmet and it really hurts.

Yup. On a Twins game recentally Hunter was talking about how Morneau learned his lesson after the first time and made sure he removed his helmet when he hit a game winner that night.

In walk-off situations, the catcher should get to use the batter's bat to try and stop the batter from crossing home. That will keep their helmets on.

Ortiz flipped his helmet off as he ran down the third-base line.

It’s a gesture of self-preservation he learned after his teammates pounded his helmet-clad head when he reached home after his first walk-off homer for Boston on Sept. 23, 2003 against Baltimore.

Maybe so, but no hits walk off homers like Ortiz, making him the master.
