I started a historical league in 1920, and the powerhouse team has been the Philadelphia Athletics... and my favorite team has always been the A's (even though I am running the Cardinals - I live near St. Louis).
So, starting in 1920... the A's build a powerhouse - winning five straight pennants from 1922 - 1926 with three straight World Series wins from '23 - '25. The 1927 A's finished 91 - 63, just one and a half games out of first place behind a great Yankees team - the A's won nine of their last ten games to make an incredible charge at the Bronx Bombers, barely falling short. October 14, 1927 -- Skipper Larry Gayton of the Athletics fired... Damn... five straight pennants, three world series victories in a row, and then you miss winning your SIXTH straight pennant by one and a half games, and you get the axe... Talk about harsh... Maybe the owner and manager had an issue with each other, so the owner finally had a reason to fire him!
