What should I do to a player that is out for 12 months?
Sorry I am quite new to baseball. Do I drop him to the minors or place him on the disabled list or what?

Put him on the 60-day disabled list and keep him there until he is healed. The 60 days are a minimum, not a maximum. That way he won't take a roster spot while injured.

It also depends on the quality and importance of the player. If he is a utility infielder who is average at best, why not cut him? If you want to keep him around due to (something that doesn't exist in pro sports anymore) loyalty, then definitely shelve him on the DL like previously suggested.

You could do several of the suggestions above depending on how valuable the player is to your club.
If you cut him, you pay the ENTIRE remainder of his contract so if he's signed past this year you might as well DL him. If you put him on the 60 day DL he also comes off your 40 man roster and that opens a lot to put another player on that roster as well. The downside to that is if you forget to put the player back on your 40 man roster in the off-season he could be drafted in the Rule 5 draft (if you have that option activated.) So be careful there. However, that can be a great way to get rid of a guy with a long term contract...leave him off the 40 man while he's on the 60 day DL and see if someone takes him off your hands. |
