How good was Salvadore Sanchez?
I know he died prematurely, beat some big name prior to, and is regarded as a legend.
Curious about your guys take on him?

S. Sanchez had all the skills....could box and punch...great footwork....good jab...good hand speed and a solid chin.
He definitely beat very good competition (in his limted time at the top....because of his early death). But in that time made 9 successful title defenses Vs the likes of Danny Lopez (twice), Ruben Castillo, Juan LaPorte, not to mention an undefeated Wilfredo Gomez (who was moving up from JFW). He beat a young Azumah Nelson via 15th rd TKO...in a great fight.. With all that said I myself have sometimes thought in his death his overall rating might be inflated some - Before winning his title he only fought maybe 3 or 4 guys that were any good at all - His overall record is obvioulsy impressive at 44-1-1 (34Kos)...with his sole loss coming via Spit Dec earlier in his career. |

Salvador Sanchez was very good but the scepticism was there early in his career. Once he was at the top (before his death) and took on the cream of the crop you could really see his talent. Everything that Meade said, he posessed. Salvador should be considered a legend among the Mexican people and all boxing fans.

I agree. Sanchez was a complete fighter. Despite his accomplishments, he may not have even been at his prime yet when he died.
I remember when Nelson (who was a virtual unknown at the time) gave Sanchez such a tough fight there were grumblings that Sanchez was overrated. Nelson had less than 15 fights at the time and hadn't fought anyone of much note. On his record, no one thought he deserved a title shot and it was expected to be a short fight. Of course, those grumblings disappeared as Nelson's career advanced. |

Salvador Sanchez is the best featherweight I have seen in 40
years of watching boxing, and he was the complete package. Boxer-Puncher with an outstanding chin. Greg

All of the above and more. The guy was amazing. He could punch,he mixed it up well,he could box,he had slick defense. He was one of the most complete fighters of all time. I would not be afraid to say that he deserves being mentioned when you talk all-time pound for pound guys. His life was sadly cut much too short. If you can find any videos of his fights...watch them...you are in for a treat.

I'll just chip back in a few more comments -
As I said prior S. Sanchez should surely be mentioned among the top FW's when speaking of this division - He was a hell of a fighter - With that said I'd give Azumah Nelson the edge on him if they would have ever been able to fight a rematch when Azumah was was growing into his prime - Hell there are just so many really good fighters from 122 to 126 in our history and up until today (with Barrera, PacMan, Morales, JMM, etc)...But I think Sanchez would have been a slight favorite over most of them - |

Salvidor Sanchez did have some problems with slick boxers as he Pat Cowdell gave him some real problems in their fight. I saw at least a half dozen of his fights, and while he was an excellent fighter, I'd rate him below Julio Caesar Chavez as the best all-time Mexican fighter.
Danny Little Red Lopez had a made to order, come straight ahead style that accented all of Sanchez's strengths. He wasn't a big puncher, stopping Lopez in the 13th and 14th rounds of their two fights after hitting him in each and every round with pinpoint counterpunches. The version of Azuman Nelson he faced was only 15 fights into his professional career and he took the fight on only two weeks notice. Sanchez never had the opportunity to move up to Jr. Lightweight, so it's impossible to say how he would have done there. Maybe great, maybe not. Chavez's body of work is a proven one and he was successful in several divisions. I'd rate him as the best ever Mexican fighter and believe he would have beaten Sanchez had they both met at Jr. Lightweight. I'd give Sanchez the edge in a close fight against Barrera and I'd give Morales the edge against Sanchez based upon styles. Last edited by Jim_Kidd; 05-20-2006 at 04:18 PM. |
