The key(s) to doing the PERFECT historical replay?

I've tried numerous times, only being able to get to 1930 or so, due to either catobase problem or I wasn't happy with the stats I was getting.

So what are the things I need to get the best results possible. (yes, i know this is ootp and i'm not supposed to get exact results, but I'd like the era stats to be around the same, and it seems I never can.)

What I'm going to use for sure.

LGO's schedules
Catobase.

And that's it

So all of you historical simmers, can you give the new guy some tips?

If you want accurate stats, the ERA Calculator is a must. After you get it tuned in during your first season, it is on target the rest of the way unless you make a mistake and forget to perform one of the steps. Even though it was never updated to V6 of the game it still works perfectly for me on all categories except triples (and it is only some seasons that they will be off a little bit). It will automatically make settings adjustments to try to make up for any fluctuations from season to season.

I don't think you can do a perfect historical replay. In my experience the best that you can do is to generate a reasonably close parallel universe.

I don't know if I would want a perfect historical replay. It kinda would take all the mystery and fun out of the game. I have started a replay in 1901 and I think I'm around 1911 and the replay is no where near being a perfect replication.

In your replay, are you making all the trades that really happened during the seasons and are you assigning rookies to the teams they originally went to?

To me, a perfect historical replay is one where the Yankees don't win 4 or even 5 WS in a row or don't buy the best talent every year and the league has a salary cap to keep the teams competitive. In my replay, Ty Cobb left the Tigers and went to the Giants. I love seeing alternate universes. Personally, I can't wait to import George Ruth as a pitcher 1914 and then import Babe Ruth later as a hitter. I can't to see what Sandy Koufax is going to do with a full career. I'm not even sure I am going to do expansion. I may keep the original 16 and never have a DH. So many choices for the perfect universe...

Ive tried and tried to get the era calculator to work properly with version 6,it just doesnt happen ,doubles and triples always get way out of whack,to say it still works perfectly is very misleading in my opinion. I start my historical seasons in 1901.The guy who wrote the program itself will even tell ya,its broke since version 6 came out.In version 5 it worked like a charm, but not version 6 because of the DIPS system.

I go and adjust the totals for every year based on the previous year's stats. Yes, they aren't exact, but it gets close enough to satisfy me.

So what are you saying, you just hit the recalculate totals button,my problem is im a big stickler on accurate totals,so every stat must be within +-10% of actual league totals or im not happy.

No, I don't use the recalc button at all. At the end of the season, i plug my totals into the calculator to see how close my percentages were. If I'm satisfied, then I pull up the next year's historical numbers from a spreadsheet that I have that shows every year's totals and analyze how much each category changes and adjust the league totals manually to what I think will get it there. Then I run the season and will compare again. If I'm not satisfied, I restore from backup, make more changes and run it again. Getting the first season to my liking took 3 or 4 passes and it never takes me more than a second run to get any one season close percentage-wise.

Well, I didn't mean perfect, as in literally perfect. I don't want Ruth to hit 700 homeruns every time, or Ty Cobb to be a star. That's not what I meant my perfect. What I meant, is all of the needed extras, ballparks, schedules, etc...

Well, I have used it with no problems at all after I get the first season to within the acceptable +5/-5 range. I did say that triples were a problem at times in my previous statement. I have played 30-40 seasons and never had a stat in any of the other categories get out of line. Now maybe it is because I only play from the 60's forward, I don't know. But I am only a historical replayer and I want good stats as well. The guy asked for opinions and I gave it and to say I am being misleading is as you said, your opinion. My opinion says it is a must for historical replays.

I decided to go into my latest replay and pull out a season to compare to the actual league totals. My league started in 1962 and I am now in 1991. I decided to go into the almanac and check 1973, the 12th season of my replay. Here are the results:
actual replay % off
hits 34010 33245 2.2%
2b 5224 5152 1.4%
3b 790 924 17%
HR 3102 3172 2%
BB 13100 13154 .04%
K 20358 20573 1%

Like I said, triples can be a problem (definately related to the changes Marcus made to 3B in V6) but the other categories fall well within the +-5% range that the ERA Calculator strives for. I also have not had to replay a single season in this replay for any of the other categories falling outside the acceptable range. I for one can live with the triples being off at times as long as all the other categories are acceptable.

The Era Calculator works absolutely fine with OOTP6.5. Just this past week I ran a replay from 1901-2003. Doubles and triples should not get out of whack to the point where you can't fix it. You should be backing up your league every season with the Era Calculator so that if you needx to replay a season you can restore your leagu from the backup file it creates and use the new suggested totals it gives you for replaying a season. never reset your league from with OOTP, always do i with the backup/restore funstions of the Era Calculator. DIPS does not cause any problems with the Era Calculator at all.
