Federal Investigation Of Bonds?

Link: http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/04/13/bo...oid/index.html

This should get very interesting very quickly.

No idea how they are going to prove he used drugs. I would think it would be near impossible at this point since there is no pysical evidence in the form of tests etc that show he used.

I agree. If they want to go after someone, Palmeiro seems like a much easier target since he's at least tested positive, albeit after the senate hearings.

Or well, you know
The person who leaked the tetismony

That is a FAR worse crime than taking steroids. What is such a thing had happened during a case against the mafia or a drug cartel?

Says here they have subpoenaed Dr. Arthur Ting, Bonds' personal surgeon. to testify before the grand jury.

I'm not sure what they can get out of him, unless he saved some of Bonds' tissue samples that the government can test for steroids.

What exactly are the penalties for illegally using prescription drugs, anyway? It can't be worse than a misdemeanor, can it?

I don't even give a **** anymore... everyone needs to leave the guy alone.... he was a great player before and he still is.... IMO, there have been so many people in baseball history to cheat in certain ways that why, especially since it hasn't been proven, is this turning into such a big deal. Seriously, people showing up with signs and throwing syringes on the field. Personally, I don't care if he used them or not, he is a HOFer... so is Palmeiro... and they need to let Pete Rose in as well!

They're indicting him for perjury, not steroid use. Perjury is a much more serious charge.

This could be trouble for Bonds. Remember (as the article points out), this is how they got Martha Stewart. If they've got lots of testimony from people who would presumably know that Bonds took steroids, plus a paper trail for what he was given and when... they may not need a positive test.

Martha Stewart made a mistake that would not have happened if she consulted her lawyer well.

I wonder if that would be true for Bonds.

Anyone hear the interview of Jeff Pearlman on the Jim Rome Show today? The interview was so freaking amazing that Rome kept the guy on for almost two hours talking abotu Barry.

I don't understand anyone who says you can't prove he used steroids or lied. What? Of course you can! A drug test isn't the only way to prove something. Just like you don't need video of a murder to convict someone, you can prove it with a preponderance of evidence. If you have testimony, invoices, drug sheet, recorded conversations...what more do you need? For G-d sakes, there is pretty much everything EXCEPT a video of him drugging up.

Wait. Leaking testimony is worse than lying to the grand jury? Seriously?

Nah, don't like that.

When the lying is of the self incriminatiing type, then yes. It would be nice if all criminals told on themselves in front of a court. But its not going to happen.
Also what is often lost in all this is the original newspaper story from the leaked source read alledadly Bonds testified in the Balco case.
We do not even know if that is true.

I still do not think this is all that bad for Bonds. There will be a parade of testimony and mountain of circumstantial evidence against him.
But what do we have right now?
He will keep more of less the same support he has now.

Only thing that would drasticly shift this in either direction is for the court to come out and say yes there is a failed drug test or we have a tissue sample that tested positive.
Even a paper trail would be shadowy enough to not change how he is viewed.

Sadly enough, even if the court comes back and says 'we really have no solid evidence'. That would not change many peoples minds.
He really has nothing to gain from this, but I do not think he is in alot of danger of losing anything either.
