NFL Cuts

There are expected to be a bunch of cuts by 10PM this evening, and some of the names rumored to be let go include Chad Pennington among others.

Unfortunately for me (as a Miami fan), the Dolphins are $21.9 million over the cap and were forced to cut Pro Bowl cornerback Sam Madison.

I think the Jets are taking a hard line with Pennington. If they cut him, the Jets get hit 12M on the cap so it would be in their best interest to negotiate something more friendly for this years cap. If Pennington doesn't give in, I get the impression that they'll cut him loose and just move on. The Jets were 26M over the cap but they've already let a bunch of guys go and restructured CMart's contract so they are already close if not under the cap already.

I also heard the Jets are going to cut (or did cut) Ty Law. I think I'd like to have him back.

I'd like to have Ty Law back too but I'm a Patriots fan. From what I've heard he's essentially gone and may sign with the Chiefs. Maybe Pioli will find a way to get Sam Madison to the Pats. I think the Jets will part ways with Pennington today, but that's just a gut feeling.

The Broncos cut Trevor Pryce and Mike Anderson. The Redskins apparently have to cut 15-20 players today. Derrick Brooks and Simeon Rice may be on the market as well.

Yeah, they did. He had a roster bonus of 11M (!) due on March 1st so not taking his multiyear options was a forgone conclusion.

I bet all those guys sign one-year deals, if they can. They're just waiting for the uncapped year.

What are the long-term ramifications for the league?
Quote:
Barring a new CBA, the players either will be on strike or the owners will lock out the players in 2008. The union likely will decertify, and antitrust rules will apply. Also, the NFL draft will go away in 2008 as part of a clause inserted in the current CBA. Players coming out of college could be free agents, with no salary restrictions. Open negotiations, including those for rookies coming out of college, will leave it to the players to get what they can get.

That sounds kind of terrible for the NFL.

This all sounds very intriguing to me. And my team is one of the ones who could really take in the ass (Redskins).

Until 2007, when Danny Boy Snyder can spend to his heart's content.

Redskins and Dolphins are 1-2 amount of money over the cap, so it looks like both our teams could be taking it in the ***.

The Redskins were going to take it in the tailpipe today regardless, the lack of a deal just means they neglected to break out the KY.

My understanding is that a new CBA would reduce the amount the 'Skins are over from 20M to just 5M.

If the players got the full 60% yes, but they're not going to get that.
