Best ACC player ever?
One of my boys and I were talking hoops yesterday. He told me that if Duke wins the NCAA title this year, J.J. Redick should be considered the greatest player in ACC history. I immediately asked him why, considering the ACC isn't exactly lacking for great players. He used J.J.'s new all-time conference scoring record and the aforementioned possible championship as justification, with the addition that J.J. staying all four years plays an important part in that.
I found a listing of the ACC players of the year through history and saw names like David Thompson, Ralph Sampson, Jordan, Len Bias, Danny Ferry, Laettner, Grant Hill, Tim Duncan, and Shane Battier. I came to the conclusion that I could probably put him in the top 5, maybe, considering that Redick is going to be a two-time ACC player of the year, and probably a national player of the year, as well. My top 3 guys, however, are Sampson, Duncan, and Hill. Let me be the first to get this out of the way: "This should have been a poll." There. That's done. OK, what do y'all think? |

As much as I hate to say it... Charlie Ward. I mean, he won a Heisman. That's pretty good.

I just don't understand why if Duke wins the national championship or not has any bearing on this discussion.

But Phil Ford and Bobby Hurley over Jordan? Okaaaaay. Sorry, not quite buying. David Thompson winning three ACC POY awards in three years of eligibility is insane. |

Everyone where I work says David Thompson, but I never saw him play, so I can't really say.

To consider JJ Redick in the top 20, yet alone top 5 would be INSANE. If he wins a championship this year? Well, first off that's not going to happen. See JJR and his previous 3 years in the tournament.
There are probably 10 players to come through Chapel Hill that are over JJR, yet alone when you start to consider the Terps, Wake F, etc...and OTHER Duke players. I can name 5 Duke players that are better/were better than JJR who may or may not have stayed all 4 years. If you want to do the searching, look at Jay Bilas' top 5 of Duke all time, it's pretty accurate. |

If you wanna say who was the best player to ever come out of the ACC, I think some d00d named Jordan wins.
If you wanna say who was the best player ever to play in the ACC, then David Thompson wins easily. Jordan was considered a very good college basketball player, but really blossomed in the NBA. No one thought he was going to become what he did. My All Best to come out of the ACC team C Tin Duncan Wake Forrest F Walter Davis UNC (barely over Billy Cunningham) F David Thompson NC State G Michael Jordan UNC G Mark Price Ga Tech (sorry Phil Ford, Price was a better pro) Here's a link to a story on the All ACC 50 year team. Some amazing players in there. http://ramblinwreck.collegesports.co...092602aaa.html
