Heavyweight Jeff Merritt

Does anybody know if Heavyweight Jeff Merritt was white or black? The title bout bio of Jeff Merritt said he's white, but the picture I download of him is black. Can somebody help me. Thank you

Yes, I noticed that on his card, too. I remember seeing him fight once. If Jeff Merritt was a "White Hope", then so were Sam Langford, Joe Jeanette and Sam McVey.
One thing that is historically true- In 1914, there was SERIOUS talk about Gunboat Smith defending his "White Heavyweight Championship" against Sam Langford! This is one thing among many things that the White Hope Era was far more benign than the name conjures up. If they had fought, Langford almost certainly would have won. Then Jack Johnson would be the Heavyweight Champ, but Sam Langford would be the White Heavyweight Champion!
(Gunboat wisely declined, by the way; though Gunboat was a good fighter, his recent decision victory over Langford was a fluke at least, and staged more likely. then Gunboat lost to Carpentier)

Merritt

I go back to the Avalon Hill days and even then his bio was wrong. How in the world has this slipped by the Trunzos for 20 years?

Speaking of Fighter Bios, my favorite was Mac Foster's card.
On the back of the card, it says - "to him, defense was just a word."

I loved it!

When I use him in my gaming universe, I imagine that phrase stitched across the back of his robe.
