Starting a thread for the game that didn't have cutesy little nicknames belittling either team in the title. Also, this thread is for the actual game and the pregame conditions. All the speculating has been done over the past 2 weeks...and I can't wait for the real deal to start this evening!

ABC 6 pm EST right? Is anyone going to be there at Ford Field?

I often wonder how the players deal with the 24 hours before the big game. Do they sleep? Do they have to take tranquilizers to get the perfect rest in?

I'm about seventy miles away. The weather had this odd performance last night where it rained and slowly turned to snow - but only after it did both at the same time for a long while. The result is that everything is covered with about 5" of the most adhesive and beautiful snow that one has ever seen.

I'm not sure if Detroit got similar weather or not. If so, then some players might get a tad cold before heading to the indoor venue.

My biggest concern pre-game is T. Polumalus ankle. If they are masking the seriouness of the injury and he cant do what he does which is be all over the field pre and after snap we are in big trouble. That is why teams get so confused. DO we block or dont we. Is he blitzing or is he dropping back. If he cant give all the pre-snap looks Hasselback and the line will be able to see the blitzes and coverages more easily.

I've never heard of a single defensive player built up so much before a game. That's just amazing. Troy is a great talent, but so is Steve Smith. It is very hard for a single great player - especially on defense - to perform at the level he has been playing at game after game after game. The Steelers may well win, but don't expect some earth shattering game for one single defensive player. When it does happen - especially in the Superbowl - it is almost never The Player that was hyped ad nauseam prior to the game.

It's so hard to be a game breaker - especially so far off the ball on defense. Of course the gimmick to the Steelers scheme is what gives TP his opportunities. But I wonder if there is a Achilles heel for that scheme? Some tweak or hole similar to the key to Martz's offenses, the run & shoot, and the 46? I guess we shall see.

The Steelers' DC was the man who designed the 3-4 to combat Walsh and Holmgren's WCO. Holmgren developed the WCO/3WR/2TE to combat the 3-4. Interesting interesting interesting minds in this game. It could be the seed of a coaching scheme that starts a trend in the NFL - or a one-game masterpiece from one side or the other. THis is one of THE BEST coaching-coordinator-staff matchups ever; Maybe since Wyche-Walsh - and much better than that match-up.

Game prediction:

Pittsburgh, thinking the Seahawks are soft against the run, comes out concentrating on their rushing game. This doesn't work, and they gain only 25 yards in their first two possessions. In the meantime, Seattle starts off using a lot of short passes and play action, moving the ball relatively well, and end up going ahead 7-0 when Troy Polamalu jumps a double move, allowing Darrell Jackson to come free on a deep post.

In the second quarter, the Steelers start to shift away from the run a little and start moving the ball better, hitting field goals on consecutive drives. The Seahawks, having forced Pittsburgh's defense to think pass a little, start exploring the running game, and Shaun Alexander starts to pick up large chunks of yardage, mostly off the left side. The Seahawks have one sustained, 8:00+ drive culminating in an Alexander TD. At the half it's 14-6, Seattle.

Pittsburgh comes out throwing in the second half, using a lot of quick outs to their wide receivers, looking to exploit Seattle's weak corners. It works well, and the Steelers pick up another fieldgoal and a touchdown, but the Seahawks manage to control the clock for the third quarter with Alexander rushing and short passes from Hasselbeck. At the end of three quarters, the game has tightened to 17-16, Seahawks.

Both defenses tighten down in the fourth quarter, and the score remains the same until four minutes remain in the game, at which point Roethlisberger, starting to press a little bit, makes an off-balance throw while scrambling to his left. It's behind Hines Ward coming over the middle, who manages to get a hand on it, but it deflects into the hands of Lofa Tatupu. The Seahawks easily score with the resulting short field, and Pittsburgh is unable to come up with an answer as time expires.

Final score: Seahawks 24, Steelers 16
Matt Hasselbeck is named MVP, although Tatupu deserves the honor.

Not saying he will be the gamebreaker just that he lets the Steelers show so many more defensive looks before the snap. He might be on the right side but he is fast enough to get to the left right before snap to confuse blocking schemes. Will he be MVP? maybe but his presence is crucial to the Steelers gameplan.

Good call, except I had it with Manuel getting the pick at the end. They'll be in an extra DB set and Ben won't be able to keep track of all of them while running out of the pocket.

I am a big Seahawk fan, so like matskralc my heart says 84 -3 for Seattle. But my head says this could go either way (covering all bases) - I'll say Pittsburgh 27 - Seattle 24.
