2005 Lahman, may be a new format

As many of you have noted, the 2005 update to the Lahman DB (www.baseball1.com) has not been posted yet. Typically, it is posted in early November. The reason is that there are discussions taking place about changing the format.

Attention Markus:
If there are changes to the format, then the ability to do historical sims in the new version will obviously be impacted. In fact, the current version of OOTP won't work either. Even if one field is changed/moved in Lahman, importing will not work or at best contain major errors.

Fixing things like reordering, eliminating columns to correspond to OOTP import format is not that difficult and Garlon and I will volunteer to make an OOTP-compatible Lahman DB if neccessary. However, despite the 100s (are there 100s?) of custom DBs created by the community, my guess is that more users still import directly from Lahman (certainly those new to OOTP use it first). That means that the new version will not work "out of the box" for historical simmers without using a "mod DB".

Markus, I know you spoke with Sean Lahman when developing OOTP, so I think a new discussion is warranted.

I am not speaking specifically about 2005 stats but the change in the general format of the importing DB, which could affect the ability to historically sim.

No big deal, we can always use the modified 2005 PureSim one, which we already have.

Actually, the main reason for the delay is that I'm behind on the deadline for my new book.

The new version of the Lahman database will be available on the web tomorrow (Saturday January 7), and there will be no changes to the underlying database structure. Importing past seasons should be transparent.

Arod is correct that changes to the design are being discussed, and if those are implemented, I'll let Markus know ahead of time so that he can make the necessary changes to the importing code.

Thanks to the hundreds of you who've sent emails asking when the new database would be ready ;-) I appreciate your patience.

Another OOTP Crash Argh!

Sorry to post this here, but I can't find the "Troubleshooting Forum"

<!--StartFragment -->I'm running OOTP 6.5 and I just copied the Lahman Database to c:\stats like the screen says.

When I click 'Import League', the game crashes.

Does anyone know how to fix this?!?

I seem to be getting a crash in OOTP5 (all previous versions worked in OOTP5) Is it because there are two Batting files and two Fielding files. Does that affect anything?

Yea, that would be it. Change whichever batting file you are wanting to use for the input to batting.csv and it should work.

Or you can combine the two using a text editor (like notepad) and that way you will only need the one file. The reason it is split up is because combined the file contains more rows than most spreadsheet applications can handle.

That's my fault guys. I added the split files for batting and fielding this year for the folks who want to use the data in a spreadsheet. I didn't mean to leave out the original batting and fielding tables. I've added them to the zip file, and if you download it again, you shouldn't have the problem.. You can also manually add the two files together, as andymac suggested.

Thanks Sean. Wasn't blaming you for anything. What you do is a great thing for baseball and OOTP is obviously not your target audience, although it is great to be able to put your database to use for OOTP.

OK, is there any way to get it so you have player names instead of ids (regular season sheet)?
