Cubs 2005-06 Offseason Thread

Since I saw one for other teams... I'll just start one for the lovable losers (I love em at least...)

To begin with, I believe that for this off season to be successful, the Cubs should get Brian Giles. His plate discipline would be very much welcomed and with him in front of Lee, the Cubs' lineup would produce a ton of runs. But, of course, St. Louis will mess that up and sign Giles.
I also heard that there were rumors of a Corey Patterson and a pitching prospect for Brad Wilkerson trade... I hope the Cubs acquire Wilkerson since he is a very good leadoff option.

Furcal would be a decent signing, though a bit pricey.

Players I don't want on the 2006 Cubs (that may potentially be on the team):
Juan Pierre
Johnny Damon
Nomar Garciaparra
Darren Baker

EDIT: I should say Neifi... but he was already signed.. a great move by Hendry

Well, the Cubs told him to take a hike so you should get your wish.

True. I've never seen anyone swing at so many first pitches just so he could go sit down and not have to hear the boo's.

This deal goes out the window if Theo Epstein ends up managing the Nats, since it takes Bowden-level stupidity to do this deal on Washington's end, unless it's a really good pitching prospect.

Wilkerson more than likely will stay in Washington. And who would actually want a guy like patterson

Um, sign a bunch of 35-year-old has beens and lefty specialists who can't get lefties out?

Nice call. I see Turk Wendell and Dennis Cook in their future. Also, maybe a return of Rod Beck?

yes.. Damon would be an improvement over Patterson, but look at Damon's home OBP and his away OBP (Not that a .342 OBP is bad, but it's not GREAT either... still though, better than Patterson like you said)

Yea. Don't the Cubs also have Corey's younger brother? I think I'm remembering that correctly.

I believe he plays SS/2B and he is a Patterson.. So, I wouldn't be surprised if he's on the major league roster by the end of spring training. He'll then take the starting 2B role away from Walker in August and he'll have a .250 OBP with 239 strike outs.

Damon is okay, but he'll be vastly overpaid and he couldn't throw out Jason Phillips at the plate. Giles is definitely the best bet, he's perenially underrated and likes Dusty Baker. Which is a bit of a quandary, since I seriously doubt the Cubs ability to win anything with Baker at the helm.

Eric Patterson has a .301 AVG and a .344 OBP. He'll obviously be like his older brother... very little plate discipline
