College football scoring: two point conversions

I was just playing NCAA '06 and ran into a weird scenario...

I was going for a two point conversion and threw an interception. The player who intercepted the ball fumbled it, my offensive lineman recovered and ran it in for the score. Am I wrong or shouldn't that count as a 2-point conversion? I only got a point for it.

if the player that intercepted the ball didnt leave the endzone then its a 1-point safety...if he did then I believe you should have gotten the 2 points, but I dont know on that one.

He ran it out and lost the ball around the 5.

I didn't know there was such a thing as a 1-point safety. Guess I'll need to brush up on the rules before Gridiron Glory gets underway (teams still available if interested, it's run by Mark Cooley)

Heh, I remember it happened in the Texas-Texas A&M game last year on national TV. Screwed up the announcers who never heard of it.

Thanks for the info. I knew there were 2 points and 1 point. Just never realized the one pointer was referred to as a safety. But that does make sense. Good to know, thanks again.

Hmmm, I thought that on a conversion the play was over as soon as any defensive player gains possession of the ball...

In college, the defense can return the ball all the way to their end zone for their own two points.

Not in (American) college football, and I love that little chance for variety even though you rarely see anything come of it.

Fun to imagine scenarios like a team taking a 1-point lead on a touchdown with maybe 30-60 seconds left, then they go for two to try to make the lead 3 points, but they have the play returned for 2 points against them so they fall back behind again. Then onside kick time!
