What kinds of names do you want to see in OOTP:BM?
I've been asked to help out generating realistic names from a variety of nationalities for OOTP:BM.
Just a quick question to the community: What nationalities would you like to see represented in the game, in terms of names? These would apply to any place in-game where names are generated. Obviously players would be the most common, but also coaches and scouts, etc. Note: Please, this thread has strictly to do with the game's names files. Please don't hijack this thread with requests for other functionality. Just tell me which nationalities you would like to see most. Steve |

The obvious would be:
Japan (lastname, first - firstname, last) Korea/China (both use the 3 name format) All Latin Countries (done individually by country to get the correct freq...)Cuba, Puerto Rico and Mexico should not have the same names list... USA (would like to see multiple lists because there are 88000+ surnames in the US - would like to see common names list and obscure names in a list not used often). Canada (broken down by province so you have the French/British breakdowns) EU Countries...done by country of course.... Former Soviet Union would be cool also Australian names - not just the bristish names. Ideally would like to just see all major regions of the globe covered..... |

I agree that, if possible, we should work to get separate names for different countries with similar names. For example, Irish vs British vs U.S., or Mexico vs Dominican Rep. vs Spain.
However, I also realize that there's some possibility that it will be impractical. So, while I'm open to the idea, I'm also considering the possibility that we may need to go with Spanish and Latin American names as one group, for example, and English names as another group. I'll do the best I can to break things out. I'll also work to represent each area of the globe, but in the past there has been little interest expressed in, noticeably, the Middle East and Africa, in terms of names. There's high interest in Europe, Asia, and America, of course. Another area that I'm considering depending on interest level is "fictional" categories such as "high fantasy." Thanks for the feedback! |

The Hispanic and Japanese name sets are done, and done as well as they can be done (census-based). F. Montoya and one of his Japanese students and I did the Japanese set, and several of the Hispanics on the board and I did a Hispanic one. I'm finalizing the Euro set ATM.

MD, how is the Euro set broken out? Are there individual files for the different European countries? Or is it all in one file?
It would help if you could e-mail me the Hispanic set - I only have the Japanese one. |

Do you have files that you currently use to generate names for the league? If so, pass them along to the e-mail I listed above, and I'll do what I can! |

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what e-mail address? I don't see one, and "battists" doesn't accept e-mail. I cannot attach files to a PM, either.

Did I send you the Japanese set, or did Montoya do that? He has a copy. Trust me, you don't want to redo the Japanese and Hispanic sets - they took hours and hours of census/spreadsheet work, and the Euro set is over 100 hours already just by itself, plus I really don't see any way they could be improved - they were all census-derived and then hand-edited by experts. The Euro set is designed to replace the main name file in OOTP. I don't recommend European national sets - my Euro work taught me that you will run into a ton of problems if you try to make accurate national sets - but good luck if you try. IMO all the game needs is a Euro set, a Hispanic set, a Japanese set (all three of which are done) and a Korean set (which isn't done yet and will be my next project when the Euro set is done). But best of luck to those who think otherwise and who want to roll up their sleeves and get to work!

I have no intent of redoing the Japanese and Hispanic sets, or even the Euro. I'm just filling the role of Collector and Assembler in the format Markus wants. |
