Signing a FA in the middle of the season to a $ contract

Question - if I sign a player off the free agent list in the middle of July do I pay only half of what he is asking in the end?

For example, Player X wants a 1 yr $900,000 contract and he is on the free agent list. Do I only end up paying only about 1/2 that?

Yes, I believe so. it goes the same for Sptember callups. Their salary may say $300k, but you only pay $50k for the one month of September.
