CatoBase Replacement & Potential Naming

As you may have noticed, there is a thread in the main forum regarding a potential replacement for CatoBase, with the OOTP:BM version being the "target" version, but also supporting "legacy" version(s) of OOTP.

I had volunteered to register the project over at SourceForge.net under the GPL license, so that the source would be open for everybody, and it could be centralized. Larry made a good point about opening up (to a degree) his Anderson Utilities, as well.

With that in mind...here's a poll!

I voted Catobase2006 because it honors the original program that really makes OOTP worth playing plus the name Catobase is known throughout the OOTP world so people will immediately understand what the program does.

I voted for catobase2006.... I would not vote for the anderson utilities for one reason - if he went the route of Jeff Cato and Joe Simpson then we would be SOL, AGAIN! He will release bits...not good enough... nothing he is doing is rocket science and can be duplicated and put into a public project where others could improve, modify or redistribute it in a completely different manner.... I will pass on this and just wait for the new version and access the data myself..... If he released just hooks into his program the problem would be who would support the add ins when something goes wrong. The second programmer only has a hook not the source.... not a good idea.

I understand fully Larry's view on his source code, he did put a lot of hours into his project. But then so did Jeff Cato and he skipped. Not saying Larry will, just saying it could happen.... Now if Anderson Utilities was a program that he was selling then I could see not releasing anything, other wise open it up and let anyone and everyone improve on a good idea......

I would love to see the project go well as open source. Then others can improve for their own use or add to the project - great idea.....

Just my opinion.

Catobase is not the same as Anderson Utils. We need to keep this to just one simple program, the CATOBASE output like it is now. Adding all the extras will make this one mega mess with it showing too much info. I would rather see two or three programs or more than to have one program that tries to fit it all. Also with the catobase data being in a database the end user can use it as he sees fit. Just my opinion. The two programs are two completely different type of modules and should stay that way.....

I have no problem with naming it Catobase 2006. My only concern is if Jeff Cato will mind a new program built to sound like his original. I mean it has his name in the program...Any thoughts?

Jeff Cato turned his back on the OOTP long ago. Time to take his work to the next level with or without him. Sorry to sound cold but its just business.

While I do agree with you, it's got the guy's name in it...I don't know, maybe I'm alone on this but if I were him I'd be a bit angry if some guys I've never met were using my name in a program I have no control over.

Jeff is welcome to drop by and complain about it at any time. If he contacts somebody and says, "please don't use my name", no problem...and that stands even after the project starts. Heck, the name CatoBase wasn't even adopted by Jeff until v6, and that was on the suggestion of somebody here in the first place.

I mean, Jeff hasn't even posted here since, what, last June?

I think we're missing another point: Cato the Elder was a Roman historian (IIRC). I always found it very ironic that a history app was written by someone named Cato. So there's that legacy as well.

Well I'm convinced then. Looking at the poll I'd say we have to name it Catobase2006, at least as a working title for now.

eriqjaffe-please get us going on sourceforge

I'll open up a new thread and get this baby moving.

also makes sense for just the linkage of the name itself as everyone knows it by that

Yes, so I do not think any name needs to lock in the "Cato" aspect. People can adjust to a name change. Frankly I think it would be a better idea not to use his name. It could be considered an honor, and he probably did not register the name or anything (right?), but personally I just feel it should break from using his name presumably without his knowledge. True he may be lurking and know about this and not be vetoing it, yet I think it more likely he does not know and saying that if he does not nix it that it is fine does not seem right to me.

I think "OOTPBase" is good because it includes the "Base" part for those wanting continuity in the naming. Maybe something like ReferenceBase or OOTP ReferenceBase could pull in the Baseball Reference aspect.

I voted OOTPBase for the same reason as gmo and marky. CatoBase has Jeff's name in it. Even though he's not here to complain, let's not give him a reason to.
