Nomar Saves Two Women

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2188462

Quote:
BOSTON -- Former Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra rescued two women who had fallen into Boston Harbor late last week, his uncle and a witness told the Boston Herald.

Garciaparra, traded to the Chicago Cubs on July 31, 2004, was with his uncle in his Charlestown condominium at about 10 p.m. Friday when they heard a scream and a splash, said the uncle, Victor Garciaparra.

As soon as the All-Star shortstop and two-time American League batting champ ran out the door to help the woman, her friend also fell in, hitting her head on the pier, said Victor Garciaparra, who oversees his nephew's business and charitable ventures.

Victor Garciaparra jumped from the balcony to the water 20 feet below.

"I swam towards them and by the time I reached them, Nomar was already there holding the girls up," he told the newspaper. "But he couldn't get them up without help."

One woman had a large lump on her head and appeared to be unconscious, he said. When she came to, the first thing she said was: "Are you Nomar?" Victor Garciaparra said.

The two men pulled the women from the water. Their husbands arrived and whisked them off to the hospital before the Garciaparras even got their names, he said.

Johnny O'Hara of Natick witnessed the incident from his boat.

"A bunch of us came running over and sure enough, pulling the two girls from the water was Nomar," he told the newspaper. "It was crazy. Nomar was like jumping over walls to get to the girls and the other guy leaped off the balcony. It was unbelievable."

Nomar Garciaparra was unavailable for comment, his uncle said.

He isn't a better player than A-Rod but he is a better lifeguard.

I want to make this joke before everyone else does:

"Too bad he couldn't save the Cubs from drowning."

Ah... Yeah. That was awesome.

"Nomar is reported to have pulled several muscles during the rescue, and for the next 4-6 weeks will only be available for substitute appearances of minor rescues, such as getting kittens out of trees."

I believe that sentence was omitted from the article.

I hate to say this, but this story looks fake. I understand that it is not, but it looks almost made up.

On the other hand, that is very herioc and I commend Victor and Nomaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah for what they did.

ARod, though, makes a good crossing guard.

I'd say this is the most suspect part:

One woman had a large lump on her head and appeared to be unconscious, he said. When she came to, the first thing she said was: "Are you Nomar?" Victor Garciaparra said.

What we don't see in that was the last thing she said before slipping into unconsciousness was "Close the online baseball league" a la Car Wash Kid.

There's a hilarious thread over at Primer on this.

Two of the best:

"Ozzie Guillen would have sacrificed one, left the other stranded, and been hailed for his use of the productive death."

From Moe Jorgan:

"Billy Beane never should have thrown those women into the water."

My favorite:

Notice that Repoz had to link to the SF Chronicle. That's because the Boston Herald's headline was "Nomar Found Holding a Nearly Drowned Woman." For first five paragraphs, the Herald just compares Garciaparra to OJ Simpson, followed by a section attempting to explain Garciaparra's elusive Mexican herritage as well as a recap on his final months as a Red Sox. Only on page B-12 does it acknowledge that he saved the women

One for GR:

Nomar would have gotten to the women sooner, but he paused on the pier to adjust his gloves, tap his feet, cross himself, and tap his feet again before diving in.

Oh man you guys have to read that thing:

"If David Eckstein had been there, then Scott Rolen would've rescued them. "

If Skipaway was there, he would have argued with them about whether they were actually drowning or not.

If Eck was there, he would vigorously begin the rescue but get bored halfway through and quit.

If Jax was there, both women would be satisfied.

If LL was there, his twin girls would save them and he would later recant his emotional account of proudly watching them from the shore in a 1,000 word post on this board.

If spleen was there he would make sure to let everyone know that he could rescue them the best if he gets to pick the women that fall in the water.

That was awesome, my favorites of the ones not mentioned yet:

"Sveum would've waved them both home. They would have zero chance of making it."

"Dusty Baker would've left them in too long and they would've drowned."

Not copy and pasted, but I got the gist of them.

If ctorg were there he would continuously swim around in the water until they finally put him in charge of the coast guard since he is always around.

If AA were there, he would dress in disguise, save the women, and then refuse to admit that he had anything to do with it.
