For every league I have, Catobase eventually stops working
It's the Win Shares. Apparently if something is amiss in the database regarding the manager fields, it has errors with Win Shares calculation. Or something like that. Whatever it is, every single league I have run with OOTP6 using Catobase has eventually had Win Shares crap out, and I've had to turn the feature off. An error message about a null integer or something comes up, and when it's done making the pages, some or all players for that season have no Win Shares records.
I don't have MS Access, so I can't fix the database itself. I would bring it to work, but the computer I play on 1) has no internet access and 2) has a broken CD-R drive, so transporting large files is not very possible right now. Do other people commonly see this issue come up? I know others have had the problem, but I'm trying to gauge how common it is. I also don't know why it happens or if it can be prevented by taking measures ahead of time. Sometimes it takes quite a few seasons for it to happen, sometimes just a few, so I wanted to differentiate between people who sim a lot of seasons and people who haven't done so.

I voted option #2. I haven't used it a whole lot because when I did something always went wrong. It seems that some people have no probs and others do. It just seems to be too high a maintenance program for my taste.

CTorg - those USB flash drives are getting down right dirt cheap now days. Especially the smallest size which is all the would be required to hold a zipped mdb file. Of course, a new CDR would only cost around $50 or so tops too. So maybe that doesn't help much.

How far down the line does this usually happen to you? I've gone as far as 30 years without seeing this...

Over 600 seasons played - no problem that I could not fix. But again I am a programmer by trade and have used access for about 14 years. I have had small problems and I feel that the design of the program is not great. I don't believe a program should blow up if there are data problems. Maybe log the problem, skip the record and keep processing. The program started small and grew to what it is today. It needs an overhaul for sure.....

Don't use Winshares, Don't have a problem (also dont use Minor league stats, pictures, logos). Only have 30 players in the Top rankings. Started with (Historical Players) 1901, now up to 2041 (fictional - couldnt stop with 2000 as planned!!!)

Just wondering if anyone has ever come up with a reliable way to fix this other than turning off Win Shares, which is what I've had to do.

Your problem is easy to fix, but requires ACCESS to maintain a table... Someone should write a simple table maintenance program for this database. 99% of the problems have a simple fix, once you know the problem and the table it is in. As you stated almost all are winshare related. |
