Minor League Team History 1883-2005 available
Jason Webb's Minor League Team History is now available at the OOTP Download Center.
The database includes 22,383 Teams in 2,395 leagues with city, state, nickname, affliate, and classification information. I was inspired by La Grande Orange and his work with the International League, American Association, and the Pacific Coast League I decided to try to put together a minor league team history. I relied on several resources including Lloyd Johnson's Encyclopedia of Minor League Baseball, and Mike McCann's website. Several SABR research projects including, Michael Hothan’s catalog of leagues, Ron Henry’s listing of Major and Minor League Franchises, and SABR’s Minor League Committee newsletters. Paul Rivard has also been a great help. He knows more about the details of baseball history then anyone I know. Also, I did independent research. A special thanks has to go to all of these who helped. This project is a continual work in progress, and is far from complete. I see three practical uses for this database for the OOTP community. 1) Historically accurate minor league team names for those who play historical leagues. 2) Those who want to play with fictional players but historical leagues. 3) If OOTP7 allows for multiple leagues then this can be a starting point for historical leagues to have correct minor and foreign league and team information. I hope you all enjoy! Last edited by gohorns98; 04-15-2005 at 12:10 AM. |

That's a really cool project and I for one appreciate it! I was looking for this information a couple days ago, and discovered it was very difficult, in fact nearly impossible to find it all in one place. This takes care of that! Thanks for the hard work!

Two things to mention:
1) There's going to be a new edition of the Encyclopedia of Minor League Baseball published later this year. It's been mentioned several times now on the SABR listserv. It's going to include leagues that had been left out of the previous edition. 2) I've got more league data and suggestions to pass along for the minor league file, as I mentioned in the other thread. E-mail to follow in a few days hopefully.

Just a friendly bump for a really great reference file.
Plus, I just recently finished researching some of the winter league data from past weekly issues of TSN. I'll have to it organized and passed along for inclusion... |

This is yet another great utility developed by the talented OOTP folks who are truly adding so much to this already very enjoyable game! Thanks again!

I want to give this a bump and make a request.
On my machine I do not have Excel and am not able to actually open up the file quite rightly. I am not sure what all exactly in the file takes advantage of spreadsheet capabilities except that there are I believe 3 worksheets there, but would it be possible to post this somewhere in a csv or txt format? Thanks. |

The last I heard, gohorns had lots of Real Life™ stuff that was keeping him busy, so I don't think he's had the chance to do any more work with this file.
I decided in the interim that I'd try to keep developing the file. I've downloaded gohorns' version and am cleaning it up and reorganizing it a bit. I'm also adding data for some of the leagues that were missing, as well as adding some new stuff to it. I'm adding a Division column for the Team Data that will indicate which division a team is in, when the league has a multi-division structure that season. This will paint a clearer picture of just what the league looked like structurally for a given season. I'm also adding in a League Data page, which will list the basic data for each league in a given season. This will include the number of teams in the league, the league alignment (i.e. an 8-team league divided into two 4-team divisions would be listed as 4-4), the number of games scheduled for the season, the opening and closing dates of the season, the length of the season in days, and the All-Star Game date and location, if one was played that year. At this point, a lot of the league data, particularly the schedule-related information, isn't available, but there'll be room to add it in whenever it happens to be found. gmo, There's nothing in the file that requires it to be in Excel to use, it's just that in Excel the data fields can be resorted and filtered as one desires, making it a lot easier to access information on a particular league or team if that's what one is looking for. If you want a CSV format export of each sheet as I have them in my updated version of the file, let me know and I'll e-mail that out to you. |
