It's Mike Ilitch, 1 "L". The man has made a lot of money in his time and has transformed the Detroit Red Wings from the joke of the NHL to perhaps the best organization in hockey over the last 10 years or so. Somehow his hair means nothing to me.

I guess he's a hockey fan and not much of a baseball fan.

Dude, I am telling you. He picked the Wings because they were easier to manage on his bottom line. Don't let the success fool you. If he could, he would sell you downstream in a minute.

I worked for the man. I know of what I speak.

IMO we are best off abandoning that sinking ship that is Off Topic to the rats infesting it and just starting a whole new Baseball Forum from scratch.

And with this whole Dominator/Cujo fiasco, their payroll is reported to now be around 80M$. Yeah, he's cheap alright.

And if you'll say, well they're making lots of money, well even Forbes, who loves to disagree with the leagues over their numbers, says Detroit is losing money.

Illitch is one of the best owners in hockey, he is enthusiastic about his team, and loves the city of detroit.
A lot of people think he has just forgotten about the tigers, but that is not true. He is just as dedicated to the tigers as he is the wings, but he has handicapped the tigers so badly with bad signings that all he can do is wait the contracts out. He tried to do the same thing with the tigers that he did with the wings, but it backfired horribly! He tried to bring in a solid nucleus through drafts and trading, and them lock them into long term deals. WIth the wings it worked great...fedorov, yerman, lidstrom, core guys like mccarty maltby and draper, holmstrom, etc. Then all he had to do was make some annual changes and the team was amazing.
With the tigers he applied the same formula. Unfortunately, he thought that bobby higginson, jeff weaver, damon easily, dean palmer, matt anderson, and a collection of other brutal players would be his nucleus, so he signed them all to long term deals...So the while the last few years have looked like he has abandoned them, he hasn't, he just has to wait out his bad signings and rebuild. In the next few years he is going to start to turn things around, and maybe someday he will become the first owner every to be in both the baseball and hockey hall of fames! (or maybe I am just a huge tigers/wings fan and am entirely too optimistic?)
