January 1982 Spinks dominates Canalito! Michael Spinks 14-0-0 (10) easily beats Lee Canalito 17-2-1 (0) by a wide unanimous decision with scorecards of 99-91 (x2) and 98-91 to advance to the semi-finals of the WBC Tournament. Spinks easiliy outboxed an overmatched and outclassed Canalito for most of the fight to get a very comfortable win. Dokes outpoints Trane! Michael Dokes 16-4-0 (10) needs to make a major effort to beat tough italian Guido Trane 8-5-1 (6) by split decision. Two of the judges saw Dokes winning by 96-94 and 97-93 with the other fvoring the italian by 97-93. With an all-attack strategy Trane dominated most of the early rounds. On the sixth stanza Dokes connected a hard body blow and dropped Trane for a short count and after that he dominated most of the remainder rounds. The italian was always brave and gave a good fight until the final bell. Now Michael Spinks and Michael Dokes will collide on one of the WBC Tournament semi-finals on April on the HP Pavilion. Frazier beats Masters!
Marvis Frazier 18-1-0 (6) scores a unanimous decision win against Monte Masters 15-2-0 (10). The scorecards were 96-94 97-93 and 99-91. After two even first rounds, Frazier caught Master with a hard combination and dropped him on the third one. Frazier continued dominating on the fourt stanza too. Masters made a short rally on rounds five and six but Frazier regained the control of the fight for good on the last four rounds to secure his victory and his pass to thw WBC Tournament semi-finals. Holmes gives easy account of Tubbs! Top prospect Larry Holmes 17-0-0 (16) scores a wide unanimous decision win against Tony Tubbs 16-0-0 (6). The scorecards were 99-91 (x2) and 98-91. For the first three rounds Holmes did the perfect fight behind his jab and combining with hard right hands. On rounds four and five Tubbs evened the actions but from the sixth stanza Holmes regained the control of the fight and he crowned his beautiful performance giving Tubbs a real beating on the last round but Tony refused to fall and heard the final bell on his feet. Now Larry Holmes and Marvis Frazier will dispute the second semi-final of the WBC Torunament on April on the HP Pavilion. Page and Tillis fight to a draw!
The fight between Greg Page 22-0-0 (18) and James Tillis 16-2-0 (9) ended on a draw and gave the WBA Tournamnet organizators a headache becouse they need a winner to dispute one of the semi-finals. A direct rematch will be scheduled for the end of March. After a good first round for Page, Tillis surprisingly took the control for the following three stanzas. After that Page using his better boxing skills to dominate the following four rounds. Finally the pair split the last two rounds. The scorecards were 96-94 for Page, 95-95 and 96-94 for Tillis. Page that landed more punches than Tillis (216 to 132) seemed to have done just enough to win the fight. Tucker stops Evangelista on the eight round! Tony Tucker 20-1-0 (20) scores an espectacular KO9 win against Alfredo Evangelista 16-1-0 (10) when he put him to sleep with a well timed uppercut to the chin. Evangelista dominated the first round with an aggressive style but on the second round Tucker sent him to the canvas with an uppercut. After this the fight came and went with the figters alternating on the dominance round by round until the seventh one but always with Tucker landing the hardest shots. On the eight round Tucker dropped Evangelista for the second time with a hard cross. Evangelista got up and surveived the round but never recovered. On the ninth round Tucker gave Evangelista a beating until connecting the murderer uppercut that put an end to the fight. At the time of the stoppage the scorecars were 76-74 (x2) and 77-73 for Tucker. Now Tony Tucker waits for the winner of the rematch between Page and Tillis. |

Gerry Cooney 12-1-0 (12) scores a unanimous decision win victory against Leon Spinks 18-0-0 (11). The fighters stayed toe for toe trading bombs for eight rounds until get tired on the last two stanzas and slowed the pace. After a first round on Spinks favor, Gerry Cooney managed to win the following three back and forth rounds. On the fifth round Cooney clearly outpunched Spinks and seemed to have the control of the fight but on the following round Spinks dropped Cooney with a hard uppercut. Spinks punished Cooney for most of the seventh round until Gerry caught him with a hard cross to the chin and dropped Coetze upsets Thomas! On a very great surpriese Gerrie Coetze 17-1-0 (6) scores a unanimous decsion win against Pinklon Thomas 16-0-0 (13) by scorecards of 95-94, 96-92 and 96-94. Coetze dominated the first two rounds and then he hurt Thomas several times on the third round. By the fourth round Coetze started to look tired and Thomas managed to outbox him for the following four rounds to turn the fight on his favor. On the eight round with Thomas attacking Coetze landed a perfect one-two combination and dropped Thomas that barely beat the count getting up at nine. A minute later Coetze dropped Thomas again with a hard cross to the chin. Miracrously Thomas got up again and survived the storm. On the last two rounds Coetze seemed to be winded and with great heart Thomas swept this last two rounds but it wasn’t enough to win the fight. Gerry Cooney and Gerrie Coetze will collide on one of the Wba Tounament semifinals on the Trump Taj Mahal Hotel & Casino on May 25. Page stops Tillis on rematch Fight!
Undefeated Greg Page 22-0-1 (18) socred a KO7 victory against James Tillis 16-2-1 (9) and advanced to the semi-finals of the WBA Tournament. After two even and competitive first rounds, Page took the control of the fight on the third round and never looked back. Using his straight rights and some good combinations as his best weapons Page put Tillis on trouble several times until putting him to sleep on the seventh round with a great combination first to the head and then to the body. At the time of the stoppage the scorecards were 59-56 (x2) for Page and somehow 58-57 for Tillis. Dokes upsets Spinks!
Michael Dokes 17-4-0 (10) scored a fantastic KO9 victory against big odds favourite Michael Spinks 15-0-0 (10) to pass to the WBC Tournamnet final. The fight was fought on even terms for the first six rounds with the fighters alternating on the dominance round by round. On rounds seven and eight Spinks seemed to take the control of the fight clearly outlanding Dokes but surprisingly on the following round Spinks failed with a straight right and Dokes connected his own straight right to Spinks chin and dropped him for the ten count. At the time of the stoppage the scorecards were 77-75 for Spinks and 76-76 (x2). Holmes easily outpoints Frazier! Larry Holmes 18-0-0 (16) scored a wide unanimous decision win against Marvis Frazier 19-1-0 (6) and now he will face Michael Dokes on the WBC Tournament final. Holmes easily controlledthe first two rounds of the fight but Frazier seemed to react a bit on the third. From the fourth round to the end of the fight Holmes was the total dominator and he also dropped Frazier on the sixth round with a great body shot. On rounds seven, eight and nine Holmes hit Frazier at his own using his crosses behind his left jab as his best weapon. Frazier ended the fight with his left eye swelled and cut. The scorecards were 99-90 98-91 and 97-92 for Holmes. Now the final of the tournament will be disputed on July by Larry Holmes and Michael Dokes. Cooney, the great white hope!
Gerry Cooney 13-1-0 (12) scored a KO3 victory against Southafrican Gerrie Coetze 18-1-0 (6) on a big but short battle between top white heavyweights. The fight started with a great first round in which both fighters exchange big blows for three minutes. On the second round Coetze hurt Cooney with a hook and then then he dropped Gerry with a hard uppercut. The American got up at six visible hurt but survived the round. On the third round the fighters exchanged big hooks then Coetze follows the attack connecting a pair of blows but Cooney answered with a big body shot that dropped Coetze for the ten count. At the time of the stoppage the scorecards were 19-18 (x2) and 20-17 for Coetze. Page dominated Tucker! Greg Page 23-0-1 (19) dropped hard-hitter Tony Tucker 21-1-0 (21) four times in his way to a wide unanimous decision win. After winning the first round Page dropped Tucker on the second one with a body shot. Tucker reacted on the third round but Page dropped him again with a strong cross on the fourth stanza. Page continued dominating on the following three rounds until Tucker had his best round on the fight on the eight one. But Page ended all dream of victory for Tucker on the ninth round when he dropped Tony two times the first with a strong uppercut the second with a hard body shot. Brave Tucker recovered enough to win the last round. The scorecards were 98-89 98-90 and 97-90 for Page. Now Gerry Cooney and Greg page will fight for the WBA heavyweight crown on August at the Miami Stadium. Holmes is the first WBC champion!
Undefeated star Larry Holmes 19-0-0 (16) scored a TKO3 victory against Michael Dokes 18-4-0 (11) to win the WBC Tournament and to become the first heavyweight champion of this organization. Holmes dominated the fight from the first round connecting some hard crosses that seemed to hurt Dokes. On the second round Holmes deepened his domnance connecting a lot of jabs and some good straight rights against a totally defensive Dokes. Finally on the third round Holmes stopped Dokes cold with a great cross to the chin and then he landed a hook that let Dokes out on his feet after that Holmes connected punch after punch without answer until landed a great cross that made Dokes stumble backwards and the referee stopped the fight. At the time of the stoppage Holmes was ahead by 20-18 on all three scorecards. On the co-feature fight Michael Spinks 15-1-0 (10) redirected his career after his first proffesional lost with a dominant unanimous decision win against Ossie Ocasio 15-6-0 (4). Spinks won almost all the rounds of the fight on an easy way but never looked for the definition inside the distance. The scorecards were 100-91 and 99-92 (x2). Page stops Cooney and wins the WBA belt!
Greg Page 24-0-1 (19) wins the innaugural WBA crown after Gerry Cooney was unable to continue fighting on the seventh round due to a nast cut is right in the middle of his left eyebrow. Before that Page dominated most of the fight and also dropped Cooney three times along the fight. Cooney started the fight with a big first round clearly outlanding his rival but from the second round Page took the control of the fight. After easily dominated rounds two and three Page dropped Cooney on the fourth round with a quick combination. On the fifth round Page dropped Cooney again this time with a hard body shot. Cooney ended this round bleeding from his left eye. On the seventh round Page dropped Cooney again with another hard body shot and after he got up Cooney punished him and reopened the cut with a straight right forcing the referee to stop the fight. At the time of the stoppage the scorecards were 59-53 (x3) for Page. Witherspoon wins and calls out the champions! Undefeated Tim Witherspoon 20-0-0 (14) scored a comfortable unanimous decision win against lackluster Tony Perea 14-6-0 (5). Witherspoon easily dominated the first half of the fight, Perea reacted a bit on rounds six and seven but on the last three rounds Witherspoon regained the control of the fight. The scorecards were 99-91 and 98-92. After the fight Witherspoon launched a challenge to either of the recently crowned champions Larry Holmes and Greg Page to fight against him. Holmes outpoints Qawi on lackluster perfomance!
An undertrained Larry Holmes 20-0-0 (17) made his first defense of the WBC crown defeating Dwight Qawi 21-1-0 (17) by majority decision. Qawi started the fight with an aggressive style and won the first round. On rounds two and three Holmes did just enough to win both stanzas that had a slow pace. On the fourth round Holmes had the total control of the fight for the first time using his left jab like a piston to had Qawi at bay. Holmes mantained his momentum on round five in which he hurt Qawi with a left-right combination. The sixth round had back and forth action with Holmes connecting a bit more than Qawi. On rounds seventh and eight Holmes started to look tired and Qawi took full advantage of it hurting Holmes on the seventh with a straight right and on the eighth with a smashing hook. Holmes reacted winning a big ninth round using his right hooks and crosses to put Qawi on trouble. On the tenth round both fighters traded bombs with Qawi clearly having the upper- hand. On the last two rounds Holmes stayed at distance and scored with the jab to secure his victory. The scorecards were 115-113 and 116-112 for Holmes and 114-114. On the co-feature fight Tony Tubbs 18-1-0 (1) gave easy account of Bernardo Mercado 13-6-2 (8) beating him by a wide unanimous decision. Tubbs won most of the rounds of the fight and dropped Mercado on the fourth round with a wild overhand right and again on the eighth one with a hard cross to the chin. Mercado had his only momet on the fight on the second round when he found the mark with some of his trademark bombs. The scorecards were 99-90 (x2) and 98-91. Page outpoints Knoetze and retains WBA Belt!
Without any trouble WBA champion Greg Page 25-0-1 (20) succesfully defend his title for the first time with a TKO8 victory against average Benny Knoetze 13-4-2 (7). Page easily dominated a warm up first round and then he gave Knoetze a beating on the second round using his right hooks and some quick combinations as his best weapons. Page continued easily dominating the fight on rounds three and fourth clearly outlanded Knoetze. The fifth round was again totally one-sided for Page. On the sixth round Page hurt Knoetze with an uppercut and then continued using him as a punching bag for the rest of the round. On the seventh round Page dropped Knoetze with a solid body shot and after the southafrican got up Page punished him until the bell rang. At the start of the eight round it was clear tht Knoetze was totally spent and Page connected punch after punch until the referee stopped the uneven fight. At the time of the stoppage the scorecards were 69-62 (x2) and 70-61 for the champion. On the co-feaure fight JohnTate 12-1-0 (11) destroyed lackluster Felipe Rodriguez 10-7-2 (4) on only three rounds. Tate punished Rodriguez on the first two rounds and finally put him to sleep on the third round with a combination first to the body and then to the head. WBC champion Larry Holmes 21-0-0 (17) will defend his title for the second time against #8 Trevor Bervick 20-3-0 (13) at Madison Square Garden on January 12th 1983.
On the undercard of this fight #6 Tony Tucker 22-2-0 (22) and #9 Gerry Cooney 14-2-0 (13) will collide on an eliminatory fight to determine the next WBC mandatory challenger. WBA champion Greg Page 26-0-1 (21) will face #4 James Broad 18-1-2 (9) at the Yankee stadium on New York on February 14th 1983. Like the WBC, the WBA also set an eliminatory fight to determine the mandatory challenger to the title. On this fight #7 Michael Spinks 17-1-0 (10) will face #10 David Bey 18-1-0 (8). New Boxing Governing Body The recently created International Boxing Federation (IBF) will set a four men tournament to determine his first champion. On the first fightcard at the Hartford Sheraton on March 11th 1983 #1 Mike Weaver 18-1-0 (13) will face top undefeated prospect #5 James Buster Douglas 20-0-0 (11) and on the other fight former title challenger #2 Michael Dokes 20-5-0 (12) will face undefeated #3 Tim Witherspoon 21-0-0 (14).
