Can Someone Walk Me Through This...
I am trying to create a fictional league based in NC that starts in 1910 and I want to have the names reflect those of the early 20th century, I'd like to keep foreign players out (for now), and if possible I'd like the majority of the players to come from the South. Is any of this possible? Please walk me through it, I don't mind if you have to talk to me like I'm 7 years old!!

I believe there are 2 files you'd need to edit... one is an Ethnicity File. I don't recall the other one. I'm sure someone here knows which is it.
Or if Im completely off, they can direct you better.

Boblight, not sure if this will help but I've just set up a fictional deadball-era league ready for the new version. I backed up the names/nation files and replaced the "modern US" name set with the "historical US" name set. This gets rid of the hispanic/japanese player names. CooleyVol has a good name set on PadreFan's website and he suggests that you can add his names to the US Historical set which will give you a good sprinkling of Nap , Doc , Red , Dutch, Swede etc. I went through my league and manually edited out any names that I thought weren't redolent of the era and got some great first names and nicknames from an old Neft and Cohen Encyclopaedia.
The OOTP manual is quite good if you check the customisation section (editing names and nations) but I'm happy to help if you need more detailed info. |

Further to my last post, the nations file has the two USA (modern and historical) options. The historical one is:- 4,5,39,100,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,1000,0,0 which, if you look at the beginning of the nations list, tells you what each of those numbers refers to. Having backed up the nations file I then replaced the modern US set with the above numbers.

Thank you for your responses, that will definitely get me going in the right direction!
I thought there was a mod that had names for each decade/era of the 20th century. As the dynasty progresses I would like to start seeing more "modern" names, any thoughts on this?

Was it Questdog's Era Appropriate Names? I've not seen that around for some time. I imagine you could edit the nation/ethnicity files as you went along so as to introduce more diverse names..once you know which ethnic group each set of numbers refers to. Good luck...it's certainly worked for my setup.

Beside each name in the data base is a number (or at least that's how it used to work) that number would determine the frequency that name was generated by the game. The higher the number the more often the name would be generated. As your league progresses you can edit the numbers to adjust as you see fit. You can even add names to the data base as you advance.
I do not know about this data base but many are done in excel or at least an excel viewable file for easy viewing and editing |

Oh...one more thing
After editing the name/nation/ethnicity files you need to "re-import name/ ethnicity database" which is on the game setup screen.

Wow, I think I am starting to understand how to do this! Thanks!
Obviously I need to back-up the files before I manipulate them, right? I ask this because I also am currently running a modern day dynasty and would need to reload the original files when that league creates its draft pool, correct?

That's correct and I think the game needs to be off when you make any changes. Seems to me the game finds and reads the file on start-up

Okay, let's say that I want to create an early 20th century league that includes early 1900's American names (Cap, Babe, etc.) and also includes some foreign players from countries like Germany, England, and Ireland. Is there a way I can manipulate the first_names and names files in order to draw only names from the countries that I want?
