Reinstall on a Mac - new patch?

What exactly does reinstall mean in the context of a Mac? The installer doesn't overwrite files, so the only option would be install the new game elsewhere on the HD, and then relicense (burning through a licensce), or delete the previous folder. I suppose I could unlicensce, delete all, install somewhere else, licensce again - but there must be an easier way?
