Fabl2: 1880

FABL Preseason News and Notes:

It's official: The FABL is restructuring into 2 seperate leagues.

The American League will take the place of the Western League. Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, and Washington will make up the core of the league, joined by 2 new expansion teams: The Chicago White Sox, who will play in Comiskey Park (not the phone booth they currently are in), and the New York Yankees, who make Yankee Stadium their home (I'm gonna use older demensions).

The National League features the original Chicago and New York teams, along with Brooklyn, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis.

The schedule, for now, will remain at 90 games. Each team is expected to play all 5 others in it's league approximately 18 times each season.

More to come...

RETIREE NOTE:

Here are the numbers of pitcher George Bradley, forced into retirement due to an arm injury in 1879.

Code:
Pitcher Name Years Age W-L ERA G CG SHO IP H ER BB K AS TPA
George Bradley 1875-79 27 71-41 1.92 119 103 13 1048.1 980 224 96 181 5 4
AS is all star, TPA stands for Top Pitcher Award.

Bradley was also the 1875 WL Rookie of the Year.

George Bradley will be on the first FABL2 HOF ballot, which will likely come out in 1901.

So you are using stadiums? I'm doing a solo 1876 league right now, just curious as to what stadiums you are using?

What I decided to do is to give the team the park that gave the team it's best image -- in most cases.

Here are the current FABL teams and their parks:

AMERICAN LEAGUE:
Boston Red Sox - Fenway Park
Chicago White Sox - Comiskey Park
Cleveland Indians - Jacobs Field
Detoit Tigers - Tiger Stadium
New York Yankees - Yankee Stadium
Washington Senators - RFK Stadium

NATIONAL LEAGUE:
Brooklyn Dodgers - Ebbets Field
Chicago Cubs - Wrigley Field
New York Giants - Polo Grounds
Philadelphia Phillies - Shibe Park (could have used the Baker Bowl, but decided not to)
Pittsburgh Pirates - Forbes Field
St. Louis Cardinals - Busch Stadium (chose not to use Sportsman's Park, will give that to the Browns if I reincarnate them)

This makes for a good mixture of old and new, and adds another unique flavor to the FABL2.

FREE AGENCY: During 1880, the Cubs were dealt 4 major blows from free agency. Pitcher Al Spalding, who never wanted to be a FABL Cub in the first place, left without taking any of my offers and signed with Brooklyn. Cherokee Fisher defected to Cleveland, as did RF Paul Hines. CF Dave Eggler cashed in on a sweet deal fron the expansion Yankees.

The Cubs did manage to keep star 2B Ross Barnes, OF Jack Remsen, C Silver Flint, and pitcher Fred Goldsmith, in addition to signing 3B Herm Doscher and CF Bill Harbidge.

Catcher Doug Allison was the biggest name from the rest of the league to move, as he joined the White Sox.

DRAFT: Hurting for pitching with the losses of Spalding and Fisher, the Cubs hoped to see Larry Corcoran slide their way. Nope. Washington made Corcoran the top choice. Tim Keefe went 2nd to Pittsburgh, the Yankees grabbed Mickey Welch 4th, catcher Buck Ewing went to Brooklyn 8th, and the Cubs first rounder, number 10, was spent on pitcher Charlie Guth. The second Cubs choice was 3B Tommy Burns.

No major deals have been made so far this season.

COMING UP: Recap of the FABL 1000 hit tracker and other season notes.

DEAL: In need of a pitcher desperately, the Cubs today sent platoon CF Bill Harbidge to Boston, in return for young pitcher Terry Larkin. Larkin will help ease the pressure on staff ace Jim McCormick that was placed on him by the preseason departure of the FABL's winningest pitchers, Al Spalding and Cherokee Fisher.

John Glenn regains CF full-time, while Larkin will slide into the #2 slot in the rotation, bumping rookie Charlie Guth down to #3 and veteran Fred Goldsmith back to the extra hurler spot.

2 Cubs to appear in pre-summer classic.

Chicago staff ace Jim McCormick makes his 3rd consecutive appearance in the FABL All-Star Game, while Cubs 2B Ross Barnes goes for the 8th time in 10 seasons.

The Cubs are having a down year, as they are in the cellar of the FABL's new National League.
