Questions about advanced stats formula

I have a few questions about advanced stats formula. I know that I can google search the answer, but I just want someone to give me straight forward answers here as a starting point. What I want to know is the below:

Stats fromula for ERC for pitchers, and for advanced RC(run created) for batters. What I meant by advanced RC is the more advanced version than the basic RC (basic RC = (H + BB) * (TB)/ (PA)). Maybe something like SB/CS included would be good. I kinda remember that there are a few versions of advanced RC. It would be great if you can provide info for most of them.

Besides the above two, is there any reliable expected ERA formula that can be calculated by rated stats? I know there is this DIPS ERA. Can anyone also provide info on this?

Another one here, is there any info on Win Share formula besides directly obtaining from Bill James' book? That book is not that easy to find nowadays (I think).

Oh, one last thing, can you also provide the source (eg. book, website link, etc.) for the formula when you post them here? Thanks for any help in advance.

Win Shares isn't difficult to find. I'm under the impression that the formula is quite complex, though.

As for the formulas, well, I don't have them in front of me, but I'd imagine you could dig around and find them using Google without too much effort. I don't know. I've never really tried.

Indeed... as I recall, it took up a third to a half of the book... EDIT: 80 of the 260 non-reference pages, according to Amazon.

I thought it was hard to find too... until I put in an InterLibrary Loan request for it, and Buffalo found it in a city the next county over... Libraries are your friend!

(Strangely, my mom is a librarian in that county and I had had her check for the book first, and it didn't show up in their system...

)

I saw two copies sitting on the shelf at Borders last week. I'm always tempted to buy it, but I'm not sure I'm interested enough.

Well, it's sure not on the shelf in the bookstores up in Canada. So, I can't buy directly from bookstores. As for amazon, I don't really want to buy the book without first browsing through it. 30 dollars is still quite a lot for me to shell out. *If* I don't like it, the return will probably be a hassle (need to mail it back).

Hmm, inter-library loan. Good idea. I guess I should check on it after work. I don't think that the local library has it here. Oh well, according to jmm8356, the formula sounds like that it's too complex for me to chew on anyway...

As for google search, I did try a search for "ERC" or "Component ERA" a while back but no avail. That is part of the reason that I am asking formulas here. Maybe I am just no good at google search. Who knows. As for advance RC, I don't think that I know enough to start a goolgle search. A search for "RC" only will probably has a lot of misses/un-related links. Anyhow, thanks for the advices so far.

DIPS has a ton of articles, easy to find froms searches here. I think Jim Furtado's XR is available from either BigBadBaseball.com or from a link on baseballthinkfactory.org (under stuff).

To read about WS, go to Stude's website www.baseballgraphs.com -- he also has a link to a WS spread sheet. Sometimes it is easiest to see things from the number crunching.

Anyway, those are starts.

Very valuable info and great starting points for me to learn a few things.

In particular, today I actually learned quite a few things from the WS blog section on www.baseballgraphs.com. They have some very interesting articles. Thanks again.

This seemed as appropriate a thread as any to include this observation, for what it's worth. On nearly every occasion that I've gone Googleing or searching the web for any information regarding specific analysis or more definitive answers about baseball or specifically statistical analysis -- it's never more than the screen's second flipped page before I start seeing links to OOTP forums where those discussions are taking place between, generally, well-informed and educated individuals on baseball.

To know me is to know I'm no warm and fuzzy guy, but there's a certain comfort in seeing an affirmation that this collective community is unique in communicating its knowledge to one another . . . regardless of how it's occasionally done or received.
