A Focus Study - Try and stay focused

OK, here is a list of my teams in my all computer controled simulation that started in 1901 and is currently in 1975. I simulate a year a day.

I think it was the late 40's when the 6.5 patch came out. So, if you click on a team and scroll down, on the right, you will see WIN, BAL or REB for the type of focus. Or, you will see nothing, if it was unchanged. Some teams have never changed their focus in the last 30 years.

Now, I assume that if a team switchs to WIN, they stay at WIN until they change to balance. I have yet to see a team change it twice in one year. There are 24 teams, in 6 divisions, so it is no small sample. Review it and see how the focus helps some teams and others it does not.

I really like that new function in your tool and will dl it now and use it for my own league. It's fun to see how teams did with which focus. Look at your Atlanta team, while they where balanced they where kind of the most succesful team in your league.

Good example.

In 1957 they were 65-97 and switched to rebuild.

They were at .500 the next year, then two losing seasons then ran off a string of 11 division wins, followed by 2 Wildcards. They won the Series 3 times during that streak.

From the view I caught did it really help teams if they went into rebuilding modes ? And I haven't seen many teams who were rebuilding longer than one season.

Looking through your league, I feel like teams didn't change enough. Does anyone else feel that way?

Yup I feel the same. Just look at the Pittsburgh team during 52 and 57. They were losing, losing and losing and still stayed at balanced instead of going to rebuild. Or Las Vegas from 57 to 63. Same here.
I think teams are using a lot more balanced instead of going to rebuild mode.

You seem to be getting a lot of division winners with losing records.

Let's make it three birds in a row .

It also seems that if a team wins a division it wins it almost always for 3 or 4 years in a row.

I may have missed this in an explanation, but what we're seeing (I believe) is the final setting for that year. Although it appears there are no "changes" what we cannot see is any adjustment that may have taken place in July. And I have not read enough from people monitoring this to know whether that is the ONLY change opportunity the AI utilizes during the season. Probably.

So there may be more switches in order to achieve some undefined criteria, but it's not evident whether it remained or was returned to the original setting after than objective was met at season's end. What have any of you observed?

These are areas not clearly spelled out (and I'm glad they aren't) in any documentation so discussion is always helpful.

My program reads from the file and what you are seeing are changes in July. From what checking I did, July is the only time it happens. There are two days that it happens on. Now, it may do it during the off season, but it does not post it, if it does.

So, I assume that if they change it to REB, they stay that way until it changes again...

Rebuild vs balanced

I don't know...I may have to disagree with the view that just because you have a losing record the system should change the team focus to rebuild. I view it as a choice of extremes...on the one hand, you have the "Win Now" teams...let's compare them to the Yankees and Red Sox. Then you have your Rebuild Teams...umm..this year, I guess the best example would be Tampa Bay. But then everyone else is balanced...no one else is really looking to unload salary and trade for prospects. Plenty of teams are going to finish below .500 this year, and next year, and the year after that, but that doesn't mean they go into rebuild mode.
