Question 1985 replay, records and active leaders

I'm starting a historical season in 1985 using the Lahman Database. I've gone through and edited the Record Books to make them as accurate as I could through 1984 but when I go into the ALMANAC and click Record Books, everything is empty. I edited the records in the report text file of the LEAGUE NEWS BOX and it is still there. Why won't it show in the game?

Also, I would like current career leaders through 1984. I thought I edited them before but I cannot find the file to edit. How can I do this or does anyone have such a file?

Okay..go to league..almanac..record books..you will need to manually click the appropiate button you are trying to edit.

For example...Looking at the American League Records...Look at the Batting Average. Notice the buttons that say Record, Player, Team, Year. You will need to click those buttons and manually enter them for each record you wish to add.

Editing the txt file will only effect the HTML page...not the in game record books.

Yeah, I figured that out as I was waiting. Did alot of work for nothing. I found an '87 file that was almost perfect, just had to edit a few things. So the records I'm done with, the career leaders I'm having a problem with still. I thought for sure i edited them once, but all I can find is the IE page, nothing that actually draws the stats.

Well..the career leaders in game is read from the retired.dat and I believe the players.dat file. For example, if you remove (don't do it) the retired dat from your leagues folder...and than click Career Leaders...it will only show active players in the career leader boards.

You can grab, if you haven't already, Pierre's utility suite which will give you the means of editing the stats.

Pierre's utility didn't have anything that would allow me to edit the career leaders, just individual players.

This is a long process but you'll have to manually import the historical players that appear on the career leaders list at the end of their careers. Than change each one's age so that they will remain on the FA list unsigned for the season. Your career leaderboards should then be accurate and those guys will retire at the end of the season. As far as I know this is the only way to get an accurate leaderboard for a historical season.

OOFA! I see a severe case of tired head coming on. I might just have to live with f'd up career leaders then.

That's what I'd suggest. Well, that and taking control of the Cardinals

Naw...taking the Twinkies. The '85 draft was full of studly men. I should be able to creat a monster Twinkie team over a few years. Especially since I got Tony Phillips and Vince Coleman off waivers.

I thought I saw a "unretire player" utility somewhere but I can't find it now. I thought, if I could use that to unretire the players that are duplicating in the career leaders and then use peirre's player editor to make their stats all zero's, I can then reload the career leaders and the players will no longer duplicate.

If only I could find that "unretire" utility.

I found the unretire (its Pierre's) but I can't get it to work. I open the league into the editor and move the player over to the box on the right and click update, but when I go back into my league the players are still there. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

What I'm hoping to do is unretire Rose, Carew, Seaver and Fingers and then use the player editor to zero out their stats. I'll then (hopefully) reload the career leaders and only find the active Rose, Carew, Fingers and Seaver. It sound good to me but I'm not sure its going to work the way I hope. Anyone have any ideas?

Just use my 1987 league file. It has pretty much all of the same players as the 1985 season and all the work has been done for you.

That's exactly what I did, its just that Rose, Carew, Seaver and Fingers are retired in yours, so they show up twice in the career leaders. I know its probably not that big of a deal, but I'm a perfectionist and am trying desparately to find a solution.

I do appreciate the '87 file though, I have used the retired.dat file and the records file. The records were easy to update, the career leaders, not so much.

Do you have OOTP5? If so I can whip up a 1985 retired.dat fairly quickly, it won't be completly up-to-date but will have all the important career leaders.

The only catch is that you or will have to find someone to update the file from OOTP5 to OOTP6 since I no longer have V6 installed on any of my machines, its a pretty painless process can be done in a matter of seconds just not by I.

No, I just have . That's awesome that you would do though. I wish I knew how to do it myself.

If I delete the retired.dat file, can I just import all of the career leaders myself and induct the correct players into the hall of fame? Will the game make a new retired.dat file? How would go about importing the players? I have the Lahman database, just not sure which year to use and then they'd still be active.

It would be so much easier if one could just delete a player (or four) from the retired file.

I also asked a question about the era calculator in the mod section. Where can i find the most up to date version and is it the best "utility" for getting accurate stats?

Well if you are importing from the lahman database for a particular year to start with...the retired.dat won't have anyone in it yet. For example....if you start with the year 1985...it will not show anyone that had retired before 1985...so anyone who retired pre-1985 (ruth, williams, C. Young, Koufax ect) will not be included.

I think if you import the players manually, after you have created a league from and chosen a year to begin with (IE 1985)...that it will adjust the players ages to fit the year 1985....so importing the 1927 Ruth would not make him like 90 years old...but would adjust him to whatever age he was in '27.

You can delete the retired.dat file and the game will create a new one the next time a player retires, generally the next offseason.

I use to use the era calculator alot...it will work....but take a few test seasons to pin point the desired settings you want to use. I'm use to the settings enough now where I just generally do it myself. As far as what the newest version is and where it is at...I'm not sure...its been some time since I used it. If you are not comfortable or familar with adjusting the league totals....its a solid utility which will help you a lot...sometime it will take a few tries to get the numbers just right...so have a little patience.

Here's what you need to do:

Create a custom 4-team league set to sim 28 games or less if possible with the financial system turned off.
Sim that league to the end of the season, but DO NOT PROCEED TO NEXT SEASON.
Erase all stats.
Head over to http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/ click on the career leaders that you want and then click on the each player in the top 25.
Check their last year to make sure they are not currently playing in 1985, in most cases they won't.
Make note of their last year and the http address, so for example Ty Cobb's last year was 1928 and the http is cobbty01.shtml.
His lahman ID is cobbty01 and his year to import would be 1929.
When you import a player it will ask for his ID and import year.
What I did was input all the career leaders lahman ID and last year into a spreadsheet and then sorted the names to make sure there was only one name listed, some players appear in multiple leader boards so you don't want to import them twice.
Now once you have imported all the players you want to BACK UP the league, it'll save alot of trouble with the next step.
Now hit proceed to next season, check your free agents to make sure all the players retired. In some cases some may not, Koufax comes to mind since he retired young. If everyone retired, proceed to the next step if not then reload your back up and edit all the players who didn't retire to have career ending injuries (255 or 254 on the length can't recall the exact number but one is season long and the other is career.)
Once all the players have retired, copy the retired.dat over from this league to your 1985 league.

Two players have problems due to their careers lasting longer then 25 seasons, the cutoff in OOTP is 25 so their final year will just overwrite the 25 season. Nolan Ryan won't apply to you but Cap Anson will, and will import will a little over 3000 hits. If you want complete accuracy then you will need to combine his 26th/27th season (1896 & 1897) into 2 of his other seasons I usually just used his first and second seasons.
